Doomed Confessionary: Matt Walker (Unmothered)

Atmospheric sludge/black metal band Unmothered originated in 2013 in Austin Texas. The original line-up parted ways after Covid, and the band’s leader Matt Walker relocated to Columbus, Ohio, but not before recording this record in Austin in July of 2022 with Josh Dawkins and Ryan Chamberlain. Musically, Unmothered creates a guitar-driven sound drawing influence from the likes of Mike Scheidt (YOB) and Chris Spencer (Unsane).

Unmothered’s highly anticipated debut full-length album »Corridors« was self-released on December 8th, 2023.

Can you say a few words about your band?
The band has seen a lot of changes before »Corridors« came out. Kids, jobs, and the pandemic had a lot to do with why it took as long as it did to make happen. I respect the original members Joe and Matt and understand why they could no longer invest in the band. I’m glad it all worked out in the end though, these songs were almost lost for good before I was able to track with Josh and Ryan before leaving Texas. It’s most likely this is the end of the line for Unmothered before I venture into something else… but who knows.

What was the biggest challenge for the band last year?
Making the transition to the current line up and rehearsing the songs before tracking them, just in time for me to pack up and move from Austin to Columbus. It took months. I did the initial tracking with Josh (drums) and Ryan (bass) and I then worked on bass, vocals, and mixing together by sending audio files back and forth for nearly a year after.

What can you be most proud of last year?
Releasing this record after nearly 10 years of writing it, even though it came to fruition in a way I never would have imagined.

What was your biggest regret?
That playing live is not an option at the moment with the members living apart.

What was the best concert/tour this last and why?
Cherubs played a small bar here in Columbus a few months back and it may have been the best thing I’ve seen all year.

What was the biggest surprise on the music scene for you?
Unwound playing out again. RIP Vern. Good for them.

Where can we see you live this year (concerts/tours)?
I’d be happy to get us together for a show. Stranger things have happened.

What are your plans for this year as a band? What do you personally want the most?
It’s most likely this is our Swan Song.

How can people best support your band?
Download our record.

Do you have any message for your listeners?
“Never can true reconcilement grow where wounds of deadly hate have pierced so deep..”

Adieu.
