Doomed Confessionary: Monika, Jagoda, Kuba, Robert & Wojtek (TOŃ)

Warsaw, Poland based psychedelic folk/stoner/doom band TOŃ is gearing up to release their debut album »Korzenie« on June 14th, 2024. Preceding the album are 4 singles: »Odwilż«, »Las, głaz, ćma«, »Wdech/Wydech« and »Niesława«.

On the same day, the band will premiere the album on release show at Klub Hydrozagadka in Warsaw together with Moriah Woods and Shagreen.

TOŃ are Monika Adamska-Guzikowska (vocals), Jagoda Podskarbi (drums), Jakub Guzikowski (guitar, vocals), Robert Wiśniewski (guitar, samples, synths) and Wojtek Górecki (bass).

Can you say a few words about your band?
TOŃ (“The Deep” in English) was created in 2021 by our guitarists, Robert and Kuba. They met through an ad on Facebook and something clicked. Our bassist, Wojtek, was Robert’s friend from an old doom project that didn’t get off the ground. Kuba’s then-girlfriend (now wife), Monika, agreed to become our singer and Jagoda, another Robert’s friend joined us on drums and the lineup was complete.
After two years in the basement, we have recorded our material in September of 2023 at the renowned Nebula Studio in Warsaw, a recording studio owned by members of Tides From Nebula (Polish post-rock band).
Right now, we are preparing for the release of our first album, »Korzenie« (“Roots” in English) which will come out on June 14th. So far, we have released three singles which met with quite a bit of praise.
Our music is pretty diverse and oscillates between doom, stoner, post-metal with some post-punk influences and a Slavic twist.

What was the biggest challenge for the band?
Scheduling. We all have our day jobs, hobbies, families, our drummer is an airline pilot, and it seems that we always need to plan two steps ahead to accommodate everyone’s schedule.

What can you be most proud of so far?
Our album, that’s for sure. And that we’ve made it so far in one piece and didn’t kill each other.

What was your biggest regret?
No regrets so far. Or all of them, depends on the day.

What was the best concert/tour so far and why?
None yet. We’re in the process of preparing to our premiere concert, which will be our first.

What was the biggest surprise on the music scene for you?
How much work and resources you must put in to release and promote your music by yourself.

What is currently in your heavy musical rotation?
We all listen to a lot of music and our tastes encompass most of the known genres, from pop to black and death metal, noise, ambient, everything experimental and inbetween.
It all depends on person, but the new Bongripper is definitely in heavy rotation recently. Steve Von Till, Deftones, Brutus and Have A Nice Life are always on the playlist. Hauntologist, Halny and Gorycz if you count Polish bands.

What was the best advice you’ve ever been given as a musician?
Practice, practice, practice. And, in case of issues, call your band buddies instead of writing to them on group chat.

What are your guilty pleasures?
As a band? Good coffee and sweets. And pizza.

Can you say something more about the music scene in Warsaw?
Well, the stoner/doom scene exploded in Warsaw (and Poland in general) some 10-15 years ago, and even though it feels like the biggest wave has already gone through, there’s still lots of bands, festivals, concerts and quite a fanbase.

Where can we see you live this year (concerts/tours)?
We’ve got our album release concert planned for June 14th in Warsaw’s Hydrozagadka club. There’s going to be a small tour in the Autumn, but that’s still in planning, so no details yet.

What are your plans for the future as a band?
We’re focusing on the album release for now.
We’d love to play some big concert or a festival.
Record next albums that are better than the former ones.
Oh, and don’t kill each other in the process.

How can people best support your band?
Listen to our music, buy our album, come to our concerts (if you’re in Poland), visit our social media and leave us a like and share the hell out of everything!

Do you have any message for your listeners?
There are no gods. Listen and share our music, buy our stuff!
