Dread Spire is a sludge and doom metal inspired duo based out of Northern California.

Erol and Richie grew up in Davis, CA and have been close friends since the 7th grade. The two have played together in multiple music projects over the years before their latest venture into their long-standing fondness of heavy music.

Dread Spire’s debut EP »Endless Empire« dropped on July 14th, 2023.

Can you say a few words about your band?
We are Dread Spire, a two piece doomed sludge metal band from Northern California! We have Richie on bass guitar and Erol on drums, two childhood friends who love to make brutally heavy music. This project draws inspiration from bands including Monolord, Dopethrone, and Deftones. Check us out on Instagram and Spotify!

What was the biggest challenge for the band last year?
Last year was the first year of this band playing live, and really having any kind of presence. We named the band, recorded songs, and played our first live shows ever all this year. The biggest challenge was definitely going from a “bedroom band” to a legit, live act. We were very nervous about it, and put in a lot of work to make the transition happen, and we’re glad it has been paying off 🙂

What can you be most proud of last year?
We are immensely proud of our first release, our »Endless Empire« EP. So much for the energy that went into this release came from our headspaces during the pandemic, and it feels so rewarding to put that out into the world to share with everyone. Everyone can use a bit of heavy music in their life, and we majorly connected with doom and sludge during the lockdowns. To be able to put out an EP of original music so closely tied with what we were feeling the past few years is special to us.

What was your biggest regret?
Not starting sooner! We took our time to prepare our debut EP which came out in the summer, and a lot of time was spent second guessing ourselves on the final touches. Looking back, we wish we had arranged to release a bit earlier so our music could be out there for the entire summer 🙂

What was the best concert/tour last year and why?
The energy of our first ever live performance was by far the most magical. We played in our hometown of Davis, California to what was essentially a bar full of our friends and locals that hadn’t heard us before. This was our first time playing our music outside of our homes, and the response we got was so far and beyond what we could have expected, it was an incredibly uplifting experience for us. To earn the praise of having strangers feel compelled to start a moshpit in the middle of a bar is hard to top for us 🙂

What was the biggest surprise on the music scene for you?
How many AMAZING bands there are, the doom and sludge scene out here in Northern California is incredible! Historically this area has been very thrash metal heavy (for good reasons), so we didn’t know what to expect when we started playing live. It’s been so fulfilling discovering and connecting with so many other similar bands!

Where can we see you live this year (concerts/tours)?
Our only show on the books for now is on March 7th at the Stay Gold Deli in Oakland, California! We’ll be playing with a fellow bass/drums two piece Sludgebucket and also getting to play again with Genghis Bong! It should be a super fun one 🙂

What are your plans for this year as a band? What do you personally want the most?
We’re really looking forward to writing more music to add to our live set. This band comes from two great friends jamming out to heavy grooves, and we’d love to focus on that more to start the year to add new layers of sonic complexity to our sound!
