Built around hard rock and grunge, »The Spectator« looks at a familiar but uncomfortable instinct: the urge to stop, watch and dwell on other people’s misfortune. The song draws on scenes most people recognise, from traffic slowing down to stare at an accident to the strange pull of crime novels and true crime documentaries. At the centre of it is the idea that people sometimes feel more alive when they observe the darker side of the world from a safe distance.

The band about »The Spectator«: “Have you ever been sitting in traffic on the motorway, wondering why you’re stuck—only to discover that the only reason is an accident in the opposite lane, and that everyone is slowing down JUST to stare at what happened?
It’s as if we’re programmed to dwell on other people’s misfortune.
And why is it that we relax best with a good crime novel or a true crime documentary, where yet another brutal mass murderer inventively and bloodily kills one innocent victim after another?
Maybe we simply feel more alive when, from a proper and safe distance, we become spectators to the darker side of the world…?”

Recorded at Antfarm Studios in Denmark, the single was produced, mixed and mastered by Tue Madsen. With »The Spectator«, The Human Edition tap into a sound shaped by hard rock, grunge and classic rock influences while keeping the focus on a strong central theme and direct songwriting.
