After years of experimental releases, covers and splits, in 2023 Vanessa Van Basten reunited in their original lineup in Genoa to make new music. The result is »Yes«, a return to their most original sound, where “post-rock” goes back to its most authentic meaning: absolute freedom in terms of sounds and styles, little room for conventional song form. It’s called »Yes« because yes, are back doing what they do best. The question was often “will they ever make an album like »La Stanza di Swedenborg«, their debut?” YES. Composed and recorded in sessions of great intensity, written in one breath and with enthusiasm, it’s the return of a project that in 2026 still has a lot to say.

Vanessa Van Basten was born in Genoa in 2004 as a solo project by Morgan Bellini. The first self-titled demo immediately won critical acclaim and was later reissued in the USA; 2006 saw the release of »La Stanza di Swedenborg«, their first proper album, with the addition of bassist Stefano Parodi. A cinematic mix of post-rock, sludge and shoegaze: a fairly unique sound within the Italian underground scene at the time. Once the trio was completed with drummer Roberto Della Rocca, the band released the EP »Psygnosis« (Consouling Sounds) and played live consistently until 2010, when Bellini moved to Austria. 2011 saw the release of »Closer To The Small / Dark / Door« (Robotic Empire). Two splits followed in 2013 – with Belgian sludgers Hemelbestormer (Consouling Sounds) and Italian peers MoRkObOt (Subsound Records) – and 2014 saw the release of »Ruins: Sketches And Demos« (Solar Ipse), featuring outtakes and live recordings. 2015 saw the release of the EP »Disintegration« (Taxi Driver Records), four reinterpretations of classics from The Cure’s eponymous album, with the collaboration of Franz Valente (Il Teatro Degli Orrori). Despite never pushing on promotion or social networks, the band has maintained a cult status over the years, with unlikely admirers such as Randy Blythe of Lamb Of God – who called them “geniuses”. After years of silence, in 2023 Bellini reunited the original lineup to record »Yes« (2026, Subsound Records), their new album.
