Formed in 2023, Manchester, UK based weavers of dark tales and darker atmospheres, Reliquia, have been carving out a niche for themselves in the underground music scene with a series of haunting singles and numerous powerful and emotive live invocations. On stage they have cast their intoxicating spells alongside revered acts such as Hexvessel, Darkest Era, Godthrymn, Attrition and many more, with respected outlets like The Sleeping Shaman noting how their ‘atmospheric and moody’ performance ‘hits the spot perfectly’. Their single releases have been no less warmly welcomed, with All Metal Everything reflecting on »Secret Sons Of The Barren Sky«, “Reliquia manages to pack every second of gloom full of interesting musical details and innovative progressions”. Now, with the single releases safely collected together on compilation album, Fragments, at the end of last year, Reliquia are poised to draw back the curtain on their long-awaited full-length debut album, the enthralling melancholic majesty of »In Theory And Practice«…

From the dramatic first offering of »Caesar, Bejewelled«, entwining tenebrous power and pensive reflection, through to the solitary splendour of »Give«, the album’s heart-rending, climactic, final eclipse of the soul, »In Theory And Practice« wends its way through dusk-hued territories of magick and despair, memory and loss. »Crestfallen« invites you to lose yourself in the shadows of twilight, while »Temple Terrace« casts ensorcelling hexes with its formidable guitars. The revealing and remarkable »Bone And Shale« is softly irresistible, the bindings it places on your heart like iron and even the simply named »Interlude« is an intrinsic part of the »In Theory And Practice« experience, a hypnotising caress that draws you deeper into the stygian fantasy. A gothic masterpiece with insidious elements of doom metal, black metal, post-punk and dark ambient, »In Theory And Practice« is a breathtaking beginning to Reliquia’s journey through the night and a treasure to be embraced by dreamers everywhere.

Due in no small part to the recording, mixing and mastering skills of the in demand Joe Clayton (Ba’al, Conjurer, Aggressive Perfector etc) and Ben McEwan, who worked on many of Reliquia’s early single releases, »In Theory And Practice« sounds breathtaking, with each of its contrasting elements blending and transforming in liquid perfection – nothing ever jarring or threatening to shatter the hold of the immersive experience. The finishing touch comes in the form of the eerie, unsettling artwork of Chris Kiesling aka Misanthropic Art (Katatonia, Demonical, Mortuary Drape etc) – a reminder of the danger that lurks between the layers of richly textured sound. Out on May 12th, »In Theory And Practice« will bring a touch of darkness to the days of summer to come.
