Auckland post-metal trio Sunwraith unveil cinematic debut single, »Thanasphere«!

Auckland-based progressive post-metal trio Sunwraith have announced the arrival of their debut single, »Thanasphere«, out today via independent label Rothko Records. Blending abrasive, industrial-tinged sludge with expansive layers of vintage synthesis, the track establishes a striking cinematic architecture – contrasting brutalist rhythmic foundations with careening vocal harmonies and cascading guitar textures.

The project brings together a wealth of experience within the New Zealand alternative landscape, comprising of Mathew Bosher (guitars, vocals), Brendon Kahi (bass), and Logan Compain (drums) whose collective histories include local acts Decortica, Magnalith, and Pegasus. The band reunited with long-time collaborator and mix engineer Dave Holmes to pursue vast walls of fuzz and hard rock experimentalism, capturing a sound that embraces idiosyncrasy and artifacting.

Musically, »Thanasphere« functions as a curious soundtrack to an unmade film, eschewing predictable verse-and-hook structures in favor of a spiraling, non-linear tension that ultimately unravels into an emphatic, cathartic finale.

“The project is an exploration of time and entropy,” notes vocalist and guitarist Mathew Bosher. “»Thanasphere« signals that this record has a distinct visual atmosphere – something evoking the grit and existentialism of 1970s sci-fi cinema. It’s heavy, dark music, but it’s fundamentally about rallying the human spirit against the cold, dark, and infinite.”

The single serves as the first trailer of Sunwraith’s forthcoming debut full-length album: an expansive body of work rooted in conflict, connection, and symbolism.
