»A Straunge And Terrible Wunder« is the third album from The Breedling, inspired by the folklore legend of the giant hellhound Black Shuck and the aftermath of the infamous East Anglian cryptid’s first recorded appearance in August 1577.
The Breedling is the musical pseudonym of Norfolk-based artist Chris Spalton. Spalton works in the storytelling tradition, focusing on local folklore, communicating old tales in new ways using illustration, film and sound. Sometimes the communication is direct and linear, sometimes abstract and uncanny.
His first two albums (2023’s »Irukandji« and 2024’s »Detritus«, both on Wrong Speed) saw him using sound to expand his visual narratives into three dimensions. He approached electronic music like he approached visual art – playfully and without fear, unrestricted by perceived genre rules and we (Wrong Speed) loved it.
Focusing on a single folk horror tale feels like a natural progression, forcing Spalton to be tighter and more concise in his arrangements but wilder and weirder in composition and tonal choices.

»A Straunge And Terrible Wunder« is divided into two halves, tracing the arc of this flatland nightmare through the ages.
The first side ORIGIN draws from the original events at Bungay and Blythburgh in 1577, where the giant dog Shuck brought carnage to the region, bursting into churches amidst thunder, fire and death.
The second side UNDYING looks at the creature’s lingering presence through centuries of folklore, memory and fear, exploring the psychic bruises left upon a landscape where the story refuses to die.
Blending heavy industrial doom, field recordings, drones and cinematic soundscapes, The Breedling conjures a version of East Anglia haunted not only by myth, but by the weight of history itself. Ancient ruins, marshland dread, dark rural paths, stormy skies, vast Norfolk horizons and the hound’s hot breath become part of a living folklore where truth and the blackest legends blur together.
The hound still walks. This is his sound.
