“Doom metal, battle hymns, and cosmic horror.”
In the foothills of the Sourland Mountains, on a chilly autumn night with a full moon hanging heavy in the sky, a witch lit a flame under her cauldron… and began preparing a wicked brew!
Into the bubbling concoction she placed the key ingredients: old Black Sabbath records, short story collections by Robert E Howard, Lovecraftian horror, and seven string guitars.
“Hmmm… close, yes, so close… but it’s still missing something,” she said when tasting it. And so she added in a generous helping of the ancient blues, and a handful of old-time banjo murder ballads. The cauldron boiled violently as she continued stirring it. The amber flames feeding it cast eery and fantastical shadows among the trees. The forest itself grew quiet and sullen in anticipation of the eldritch magic being summoned.
When at last the brew was perfect, the crone let out a gleeful cackle. “Doom Metal!!!,” she howled triumphantly, and her cry echoed through the hematite depths of the forest. And on that unholy night, with the smoke of the fire drifting ever upward, Jackals’ Feast was born!
On September 13th, Jackals’ Feast will unleash their stunning debut album, »Lost In The Forest And Tormented By Demons«, and the title says it all. Dark, soulful doom with touches of gothic americana that simultaneously crushes and warms the soul.
In the band’s own words:
“I like big heavy riffs, and I think the best music happens at about 60 bpm. But there’s also a huge folk / blues / Americana influence, because that was such a part of my life for so long. Five out of six of these songs started out on acoustic guitar.
Musically, Ozzy’s time in Black Sabbath is the gold standard, as far as I’m concerned. Also Crowbar, who I don’t think have ever recorded anything that wasn’t perfection. I’m also very inspired by mood and atmosphere in music – Pallbearer’s live show was hugely influential. I think »Dig Your Own Grave« was more than a little influenced by My Dying Bride, even if they never got quite so gory.
Lyrically, this entire project stems from the writings of Robert E Howard and HP Lovecraft. Conan the Barbarian, Solomon Kane, Kull the Conqueror, and Lovecraft’s Cthulu Mythos. I read all of that, didn’t find anyone writing the songs in that vein that I wanted to hear, and just wrote them myself. All of these songs started as lyrics on a page and then I worked backwards to turn them into music that I thought fit.
And there’s always more music in the works! To me, the focus is always on the song. I’ve already got three written for the next album, which will probably delve further into the horror themes touched on in this one.”
