Evolving over the course of the last decade from their origins as a primitive sludge/crust project in pursuit of sonic obliteration, Hudson, New York-based Hush has grown into a far more expansive interpretation of their sound. During that time, Hush has demonstrated the arc of their exploration in the form of four releases that bring listeners through hostile, suffocating soundscapes dominated by visceral despair.
The most recent of these, the 2022-released »The Pornography Of Ruin« LP delivered nearly an hour of music, finding Hush incorporating extended dreamlike passages of dark melody and ambient textures into their existing core of sludge tempos and waves of distorted dissonance.
Hush is currently finalizing their fifth album. The songwriting process for the record began when a post-tour lineup shift on guitars resulted in the addition of Ryan Rapp (House Of Worship), who was previously working on music for a planned collaboration between his solo instrumental project and Hush. »In The House Of Worship«, the revamped lineup’s first new track now sees the light of day, was born from this collective writing process and seeks to fuse the sound of previous Hush releases with added elements of vintage heavy metal riffing and sparse melodies. The outcome delivers massive doses of crushing melancholy right up to the last squelch of distorted feedback as it fades out.
»In The House Of Worship« was written, performed, and recorded by Hush at their studio in Hudson, New York, and was mixed and mastered by Gabe Vanbenschoten (Failure, Engine Kid, Mossbreaker).
Hush vocalist Charles Cure elaborates regarding the new track, “Lyrically, the song dwells on the themes of transformation and renewal of the self, which is a key motif in our band’s previous work. It is about departure from one version of yourself and learning to inhabit a new and truer form. Within the context of the song, this is accomplished by a prayer or a ceremonial stripping away the extraneous elements of identity – past trauma, distorted self-perception, negative behavioral patterns – and drawing back to a root understanding of your nature. It is about the act of discovering who you are and what you are capable of in a new and unburdened state. To engage in the act of seeing oneself clearly, possibly for the first time ever.”
