»Abyssopelagic« is the materialization of over seven years of boldness and musical partnership between Mábura and Lagarto Rei in music.

Initially recorded in 2018 and gradually rearranged and expanded over time, »Abyssopelagic« is both the result and a historic milestone for both projects. It culminates in the fusion of two drum kits, percussion, synthesizers, bass, and guitars – transcending into this EP that contextualizes their shared journey up to the present day.

Following an oceanic theme, as the name suggests, it is both a literal and figurative deep dive into this massive sonic impact. Over time, as ideas matured and challenges were overcome, the arrangement took on proportions never previously imagined for either project, resulting in a dense psych rock sound. The bands collectively explored and pushed toward more progressive and dynamic paths within stoner rock, doom, and drone.

The EP is a direct continuation of the single »Epipelagic«, which was also previously recorded with both bands together in the studio. If »Epipelagic« is like holding your breath as you witness a wave on the surface, »Abyssopelagic« is the intentional plunge into the deepest, heaviest sonic layers experienced so far.

It is a thematic cycle that ties everything together – a long path of musical and life partnership that began seven years ago at Barbatana Studio. That moment marked a historic milestone for everyone who witnessed it, leaving a lifelong and timeless legacy. The recording includes parts from the original 2018 sessions, when the bands were younger, and continues through to the present day in 2025, marking the maturation and solidified sonic identity of both groups.

The 15-minute track culminates in »Abysso«, the deepest layer of the EP – the darkest and most immersive Drone piece both bands have created to date. The EP features direct references to other projects, including samples from “gardre” (a free experimental group formed by Francisco, Lívio, and André), and is filled with both direct and indirect sonic references to the experimentalism of »Abyssopelagic« and the dark instrumental styles also explored throughout Lagarto Rei’s (Lívio’s) artistic journey to this day.
