On September 9th, Canadian (Cambridge, ON) grind/sludge/hardcore duo Greber (members ex-Fuck The Facts, The Great Sabatini, BIIPIIGWAN) will unleash their fourth album »Fright Without« via the following labels: Ancient Temple and Nofuneral for Vinyl, CD, and Cassette in Canada, Hibernation Release for Vinyl in the USA, and 7 Degrees and Fresh Outbreak for Vinyl in Europe.

“»Fright Without« is a handleless staircase that disorients as much as it overwhelms. Our testament to suffering and hope, balance and woe, heaven and here. With Kurt Ballou lending his abilities to the mix we’re beyond happy with how the final product came to sound and we hope that the listener finds it to be as much of an escape as they do a confrontation.” – Greber

Quick Info:

Even just as a duo, Steve Vargas (drums/vocals) (The Great Sabatini, BIIPIIGWAN) and Marc Bourgon (bass, vocals) (ex-Fuck The Facts) sacrifice nothing and deliver a rush of intensity boosting adrenaline in listeners. Bourgon writes most of the skeletal ideas, which always start from the lyrics. Even if it’s just the title, it has to be there before he can let loose. Once Vargas comes in, things start to take shape, and chaos can begin.

»Fright Without« is ten tracks written and performed mostly by Steve Vargas (drums/vocals) and Marc Bourgon (bass, vocals) who are joined on several of the tracks by various musicians such as Kevin Keegan (Dead Quiet, Barn Burner, Scott Miller (Anthesis, Clouds Become Oceans, Frig Dancer), Mathieu Vilandre (F*ck The Facts), Kàrhozat, and Sean Pearson. These additions add new dimensions to the tracks, giving the listener more to chew on.

Risen from the ashes of their former band Tugnut, Vargas and Bourgon figured they weren’t done playing music together, and the seedling of Greber was nurtured from its germination to be a loud and devastating live force that could be used to vent their various creative impulses and have a really fun time doing so. Fast forward almost 16 years and it is still something that delivers on that front for them personally so mission accomplished.

Those that get to see Greber play live can expect a succinct set, with limited banter, no guitar player, high decibel levels, and a few sweet LED lights. They are recommended listening for fans of Unearthly Trance, Man is the Bastard, and Black Sheep Wall.

“For this record, I (Marc), would get some ideas into a skeletal structure via some computer demos and then send them off to Steve to hash out some general ideas. From there we just ran the Christ out of them in our jam space and they morphed accordingly. I still get amped on hearing how Steve perceives the stuff I bring to the table. It’s never the way I hear it in my head and I couldn’t be happier with the way that we’ve evolved together over the years. It’s easy to take it for granted, but it’s something that I wholeheartedly cherish and love the dude to no end.

A big difference between »Fright Without« and our last record, Cemetery Preston, was that there were a lot fewer revisions. I could all too easily drive myself insane with the “make-song-better” process and I found that over time it was way too much stress and I couldn’t cope with doing it at that level anymore.

Maybe if there were some clear-cut and qualitative progress made visible by the madness I would have had a harder time with the divorce but I love what we did with this record and am glad we switched up our approach. »Fright Without« is a handleless staircase that disorients as much as it overwhelms. Our testament to suffering and hope, balance and woe, heaven and here.

With Kurt Ballou lending his abilities to the mix we’re beyond happy with how the final product came to sound and we hope that the listener finds it to be as much of an escape as they do a confrontation.” – Greber

What the press is saying:

“Greber is here to do one thing, and it’s throw aural punches. The band is now streaming their new single »Into Silence« alongside a new video directed by Torin Langen, both of which are as fantastic as they are disorienting.” – Metal Injection

“Crazed and raging, it reaches fever pitches of savage rampaging. But even in a song (»Tree Carving«) that barely clears the minute-and-a-half mark, Greber do what they always do – shift gears and contort moods, and electrify the music with constantly changing fretwork and drum patterns. Oh yes, these dudes know how to spin heads as well as traumatize them.” – No Clean Singing

“Chaotic force of nature Greber are set to return with their latest full-length offering »Fright Without« and they’re angrier and louder than ever. The band hit the listener with a furious wall of sound that sits somewhere between grindcore, sludge and hardcore…. another solid notch in the duo’s already impressive belt.” – Cave Dweller Music
