With their fourth full-length release, the Catalan band Tort are not trying to fit in but they return to kick skulls in, to mark their territory without asking for forgiveness or taking prisoners. Because, for more than a decade, Tort have played by their own rules, combining monolithic riffs with speed bursts, a crushing rhythm section with vocal parts born from the deepest depths of the gut, looking respectfully toward their influences while keeping enough distance to forge their own unique and personal lysergic formula.
Each of the five new tracks sounds like the howl of a ruined ghost factory, like the soundtrack to a graveyard of wrecked cars, like the entrails of a poisonous abyss where tons of waste accumulate, metals corroded by time, wires and empty bottles steeped in suffocating gases.
Tort continue to sound as raw and uncompromising as on their previous releases. The beast has not been tamed nor has it calmed down. There is no gloss here, only rust and filth, a whole lot of filth.
»Dimonis de la Sauva Negra« takes its time, it plans on crushing you slowly, crawling through rhythms that fall on you like an acid rain of viscous concrete, burying you like marble tombstones, cutting off your breath by creating an atmosphere so dense that no air can escape. Tort want to crush you with these new songs. That is their main statement of intent.
Tort have become masters at creating heavy, viscous textures in which every riff, every feedback strike and every sonic lash seems to come from a dark place you do not want to stare into for way too long. Tort craft heavy and raw textures with the exact right doses of speed and grime, like an old abandoned machine rising once again from the abyssal depths to destroy everything in its path.
»Dimonis de la Sauva Negra« is the new journey Tort invite us to enter. A journey that once again makes it clear that the truest heaviness is the kind that moves slowly, yet with the firmness of an ancient rock.
