In autumn 2022, they released the single »Time Is Truth« and a music video directed by Tomáš Hájek (HatoHoto Studio), now FDK returns with the album »Sunlight«. And they confirm that there is no one far and wide who creates guitar music with a similar feeling for cutting and at the same time uplifting guitar music. In the dark post-metal of FDK, there is room for melancholic shades, but the record, like the previous ones, can cut into the living and especially overwhelm with its impressive density.
The name »Sunlight« follows the line of the previous, clearly graspable names of FDK albums, the release of the record itself is a symbolic dawn for the band, which has not been seen for a long time. “We like to put opposites together,” adds FDK, “And so it was suggested to use something that would shine through the generally melancholic dark record. But the sun’s rays not only give life, they can also destroy it.”
“We said to ourselves that we will record the next record ourselves, so that we don’t have to be under unnecessary pressure in a rented studio,” explains the band’s creative process. “That’s probably the reason why it took so long, on the other hand, we didn’t have to make compromises and could play with everything enough. We then mixed the record with Amák from the Golden Hive studio and gave everything enough attention.” The band created and recorded the record over the years in a Vysočany brownfield, where they found an ideal background. “It’s also a record about overcoming yourself.”
The Prague band FDK is the most prominent local representative of post-metal, at the same time a band whose sound has always exceeded local possibilities. Some people may remember their connection with Swiss doom/sludge band Zatokrev or US post-metal group Minsk. For the last thirteen years (»Earthlinked« was released in 2010), FDK has been practically unheard of, but the band has been working in seclusion and now they are back with the same line-up as when we last heard from them. And it’s an adequately loud return.
»Sunlight« is released on LP, CD, cassette and digital on Friday 13 January 2023 via Kabinet Records.
