Doomed Confessionary: Chris, Rich, Martin & Chaz (Meridian Sun)

Meridian Sun: Chris + Chaz

Meridian Sun is a four-piece progressive stoner/doom metal band from London, UK.

The band released their debut full-length »The Curse« on November 3rd, 2023 through Drowning Sea God Records. The album consists of three tracks over 45 minutes.

Meridian Sun are Chris Mills (bass, vocals), Rich McEvoy (guitars, vocals), Martin Maddocks (guitars, vocals) and Chaz Tomlinson (drums).

Can you say a few words about your band?
Meridian Sun is a doomy prog band from (mostly) London, UK. We have our first full-length, »The Curse«, out now via Drowning Sea God Records and we’re very pleased to be here. We like to write long and complicated songs that take years to write, months to practice and weeks to record.

What was the biggest challenge for the band?
Writing a 22-minute EP-length song was probably the biggest challenge so far. It was a pretty gargantuan effort! We had spent many, many hours in the rehearsal room honing riffs, locking in rhythm parts and figuring out the best effects and vocals before ending up in the studio to get everything recorded.

What can you be most proud of so far?
Working with Drowning Sea God to get »The Curse« out has been an absolute honour and we’re beyond pleased with the reaction from critics and fans alike.

What was your biggest regret?
We got into a really good streak of rehearsing in the run-up to recording. Getting all that down was absolutely huge. Recently, family commitments have made it a little harder to rehearse as much, but the incredible reaction to the album has pushed us to work harder and there is some new material being worked on as well. Basically, we wish we could practice a bit more!

What was the best concert/tour so far and why?
We played a headline set at our favourite metal bar, The Black Heart in Camden, a while back. We played the entire album live in one go. We were super-proud to get that down, as the arrangements are so complicated. Metal always sounds better live and the sound was incredible. It was so cool. We would love to play more shows in the future.

What was the biggest surprise on the music scene for you?
Good question! The UK music scene has just got so much cool stuff about it. In London where we are you can go and see the most heavy bands most nights of the week. You never fail to be impressed when there is a full pit of metal maniacs body slamming in the pit on a Sunday evening! Could be surprising the first time you see that! But that’s why the heavy music scene is the best. So much passion amongst the fans.
Another massive surprise was the new Afterbirth album on Willowtip Records. It started off as straight-up tech death album, then continues to seamlessly transition through literally every other genre. One minute it’s grind then space prog metal but it works. That level of creativity is so cool and really takes the listener on a journey.

What is currently in your heavy musical rotation?
Full Of Hell, Gatecreeper, Pallbearer, Inter Arma, Yob. Always a bit of Elder making its way in here and there – the latest album was incredible! Basically anything big and weird and brutal, please.

What was the best advice you’ve ever been given as a musician?
Just make the music you want to make and don’t ever expect to make any money from it – create for the joy of creating.

Meridian Sun: Martin + Rich

What are your guilty pleasures?
Simply Red, chocolate-covered peanuts and Big Macs.

Can you say something more about the music scene in London?
London has basically every band come through here on tour, heaps of smaller venues with tons and tons of bands playing every night in every genre you could imagine. There are also some incredible promoters who put on really eclectic nights with lots of opportunities to find gigs for up-and-coming bands. But there are only 3 or 4 decent rehearsal rooms in the whole city. No idea how anyone ever practices a song!

Where can we see you live this year (concerts/tours)?
We are hoping to get some festival slots in the foreseeable future. We absolutely love playing live – the riffs of »The Curse« need to be unleashed! Keep an eye on our Facebook and Instagram or follow us on Bandcamp for updates. There should be a live video coming out soon as well.

What are your plans for the future as a band?
Get some new music written, get it recorded, get it released, play some shows! Given we have never released a song less than 11 minutes long, these things take a little longer to write (laughs). So bear with us!

How can people best support your band?
Buy »The Curse« on Bandcamp, follow us on Facebook and Instagram and share the album with your friends and family. It all helps.

Do you have any message for your listeners?
Thank you so much for listening. We really enjoyed making all of our music so far and love that there are people out there willing to spend time with it and even part with their money in thanks for it existing. This is incredible and makes us very proud that these songs that have been in our heads for years are finally out there. And yeah – bear with us while we write some more prog doom metal epics!
