Doomed Confessionary: Dave Jones (Hibernaut)

Hibernaut is a doom/sludge/stoner metal band hailing from Salt Lake City, Utah.

Hibernaut arose in a somnambulistic state in 2020 when Dave Jones began writing songs on guitar, a switch from years playing bass in SubRosa, Dwellers, Oxcross etc. As well as switching to guitar he also began writing lyrics and singing. In 2021 Dave played the songs for his long time friend and bandmate Zach Hatsis (Dwellers, SubRosa, Laughter), who jumped right in and began adding his unique powerful drumming to the songs. Soon after Josh Dupree came in on bass with the thundering low end the band needed and the trio began regular rehersals.

Demo recording began that year and they soon asked Joey Toscano (Iota, Dwellers) to fill a sonic void with his blisteringly psychedelic leads, thus, Hibernaut was complete. The band’s debut album »Ingress« dropped on May 3rd, 2023.

Can you say a few words about your band?
We’re Hibernaut and we enjoy moonlit walks on antediluvian shores beside obsidian seas. We’re looking to meet likeminded souls to accompany us on a journey through space, interdimensional of course, and what we perceive to be time. If you like low tunings, loud amps and lurid lyrics, we may be a match.

What was the biggest challenge for the band this year?
The biggest challenge every year is giving “real life” the finger and spitting in Time’s face. It’s alway hard to get four people together at the same time and it doesn’t always happen but we manage to make it work and shirk as much responsibility as possible in the process.

What can you be most proud of this year?
Mainly the release of our debut album »Ingress«. It was great to share it with everyone and we are stoked by the reception it got. We had the honor of placing 15th in Doom Charts the month Ingress came out.
We also gained Matt Miller as our new lead guitarist and have written and recorded our next album so we’re real happy about that.

What was your biggest regret?
No regrets! Although it would have been fun to play more shows.

What was the best concert/tour this year and why?
We played our first show as a band and it was so much fun. It was at our favorite local venue Aces High Saloon here in Salt Lake City, Utah which is a true heavy metal bar. All our friends came out and we had the pleasure of playing to a packed house with the best energy. We posted the whole show on our YouTube channel so check it out.

What was the biggest surprise on the music scene for you?
No surprises, just another year of great releases from awesome bands that are fortunate enough to share the scene with.

Where can we see you live next year (concerts/tours)?
We don’t have anything set up yet but we will definitely be appearing more locally and are talking about touring the states in the fall.

What are your plans for the next year as a band? What do you personally want the most?
We plan on releasing our second record that we are just finishing up mixes on. There’s a split in the works as well. We also have some music videos in production for some of the songs off Ingress which has proven to be another creative outlet. Personally I want to write and record a third record because creating music or any art is extremely fulfilling.

How can people best support your band?
Listen to the music and tell your friends about us. It’s all about word of mouth and community when it comes to underground music.

Do you have any message for your listeners?
Thank you! We’re stoked to be able to share what we do with you.
