Doomed Confessionary: James, Ethan & Brandon (Cannabus)

Cannabus is a stoner/desert rock trio from Ontario, Canada. Their first release »The Maple Spliff Sessions« was a accumulation of a year and a half of jams and transforming it into a 4 song EP ladened with 60’s and 70’s heavy tripped out psychedelic vibes and thunderous 90’s fuzzed out riffs.

The band’s second EP »Other Side« will be released this Friday, April 19th, 2024 via Black Throne Productions.

Cannabus are James Matheson on guitar & vocals, Ethan Scott on bass and Brandon Doucet on drums.

Can you say a few words about your band?
Cannabus is a three piece stoner/heavy psych/desert rock band from Welland Ontario. We meld a mix of fuzzed out blues rock with hints of punk and metal.

What was the biggest challenge for the band last year?
We have nothing but a blast last year playing shows around Niagara Region, Hamilton and Toronto. Nothing has really felt like a challenge to do so far, hahaha.

What can you be most proud of so far?
I think we never expected for our first EP »The Maple Spliff Sessions« to get as much attention as it did, and do get to play a bunch of shows with some many great local bands has been serial.

What was your biggest regret?
We defiantly hate missing out on not playing shows and we took a bit of a break from playing live to write. So I guess we kind of regret that a bit but it was definitely worth it.

What was the best concert/tour so far and why?
We did a run of shows through September/October last year and we had a play getting to play every week and couple double header weekends. Alot of great local bands in our area plus bands coming down from Quebec.

What was the biggest surprise on the music scene for you?
How many great local and bands from aboard there are that put-on killer live set. Bands like Son Of Arrakis, Aawks, Low Orbit, Ol Time Moonshine, Tumble, Astral Witch, Ivy Gardens and so many more.

What is currently in your heavy musical rotation?
James: Dead Meadow, Nebula, Child.
Ethan: Dock Boggs.
Brandon: Ester Rose, Electric Wizard, Kid Congo and The Pink Monkey Birds.

Can you say something more about the music scene in Welland, Ontario?
We are very lucky to be so close to killer music scenes in Hamilton, Niagara and Toronto. The number of bands that really put on a good show is truly humbling to us.

Where can we see you live this year (concerts/tours)?
April 12th at Over Time Bar in Kingston, ON with The Winter In Canada, God Thorn
April 13th at Turbo Haus in Montreal QC with The Hazy Tones, Scorbut
April 18th at The Kavern in Welland ON with The Hazy Tones, Violet Fire and Stagnant
April 19th at Door’s Pub And Tacos in Hamilton ON with The Hazy Tones, The Barrel Rejects and The Electric Cactus
April 20th At Bovine Sex Club Toronto in Toronto ON with The Hazy Tones, OI Time Moonshine and The Electric Cactus

What are your plans for the future as a band?
»Desert Trip« is the single from our new EP »Other Side« coming out April 19th of this year through Black Throne Productions. We have been working on these songs since we released of our first EP »The Maple Spliff Sessions« back in April 20th of last year. The idea was that »Other Side« is the second half of our first EP, but being heavier in subject and sound. We worked with Z Hollow Studios to expanded more on our sound and try some new things recording we hadn’t on the first EP like more double tracking and recording multiple amps to fill out the sound. We are all very excited for everyone to hear what we have done with the new EP. We also have an April tour planned along with the new EP, in cities across Ontario and Quebec, Canada.
