Doomed Confessionary: Jimmy, Boris & Andrew (Massa)

Photos by Ron van Rutten
Massa, hailing from Rotterdam (The Netherlands), is a dynamic instrumental post-rock band known for their big, fat and atmospheric sound, adding their own heavy elements to create a cinematic musical experience.
Their sound is a captivating blend that sets them apart: Massa takes listeners on a journey through a sonic landscape that is truly their own. They have been in a state of dormancy due to circumstances since their last release »Walls«. With the addition of Jimmy, the band has delved into new depths, breathing life into their music once again. Gradually awakening from their winter slumber, Massa released their full-length debut album »Psyche« on October 27th, 2023.
Can you say a few words about your band?
Hi, we are Massa, a heavy, doomy post-rock band based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. If you like bands like Mogwai, Red Sparowes or The Melvins, you might like us too!
What was the biggest challenge for the band last year?
Finishing our album »Psyche«. Sometimes we joked about it being our »Chinese Democracy«.
What can you be most proud of last year?
Finishing our album »Psyche«. We’re really proud of how it turned out!
What was your biggest regret?
Not including pyrotechnics on our release show! But seriously, I don’t think we regret anything; we carefully consider everything we do as a band, and I think that has worked out well so far.
What was the best concert/tour last year and why?
Jimmy saw the Cult Of Luna/Russian Circles European tour which was nice. Boris really enjoyed Mono on this year’s tour, and Andrew’s favorite show this year was Pantera in Berlin.
What was the biggest surprise on the music scene for you?
Musically, I (Jimmy) was really surprised by the new Water Damage album. I didn’t know them before, but they create a huge droning sound which never gets boring. Also, the album Nothing and Full Of Hell put out together is (to me) quite surprising and fresh. Boris really liked the new stuff The Smile put out this year. Andrew only listens to stuff he already knows, so no surprises there
Where can we see you live this year (concerts/tours)?
We hope to play the Little Devil in Tilburg. We’ve been back and forth with them looking for possibilities, but so far we’ve had bad luck that when they had a slot open, we couldn’t make it.
What are your plans for this year as a band? What do you personally want the most?
I think we want to keep writing new stuff basically. That’s what gives us the most energy as a band, bouncing off each other’s ideas. And maybe some shows/support slots with cool bands at nice venues, we would like that too.
How can people best support you?
It would be awesome if people buy our album via bandcamp (massaband.bandcamp.com) . However, genuine appreciation for what we have made is also great.
Do you have any message for your listeners?
