Doomed Confessionary: Kük & Ryan (Gurney)

Gurney is a sludge/doom/death metal quartet from Kansas City, Missouri featuring current and former members of downthesun, The Messiah Complex and more. Conjuring the sound of 4 Orcs hot boxing a monster truck, Gurney keeps it low, slow & disgusting.
Gurney went into the studio with producer Justin Mantooth (Orphans Of Doom, Hyborian) late 2023 and recorded their first official release »The Creeper«. With more music on the horizon and an impeccable merch game, they are just getting started.
Debut EP »The Creeper« was released on February 10th, 2024.
Gurney consists of Steve Warrell on vocals, Ryan Hundley on guitar, Lance “Kük” Collier on bass and Shaun Hoover on drums.
Can you say a few words about your band?
Kük: Gurney is grossly heavy sludge/death/doom.
Ryan: We just try and play music that we love in hopes that people will be able to connect with it. I love the term SLUDGEDEATHDOOM we have sloganed 🙂
What was the biggest challenge for the band?
Kük: We are a 4 member band, so we each have an equal say in the workings of the band. So sometimes it’s challenging to get an answer to things like shows and stuff in a timely manner Hahaa..
Ryan: Agreed lol
What can you be most proud of so far?
Kük: Me personally, I’m most proud of the way we work together, and the hard work everyone puts in, also the way we try to be supportive of our other peers in the scene, I feel like it creates a better scene for all.
Ryan: Most proud of how much we’ve grown as friends. We’ve got a pretty tight relationship all together. It’s rad!!!
What was your biggest regret?
Kük: None so far, it’s been a great year for us.
Ryan: ***No regerts*** lol
What was the best concert/tour so far and why?
Kük: All of them, I personally enjoy every show/tour, anytime I can play music live, I’m grateful! When Covid hit I think it was a shock to all in the music industry so yeah man anytime we can play live for people, that’s the best show!
Ryan: Honestly, they just keep getting better and better its wild. I feel blessed!

What was the biggest surprise on the music scene for you?
Kük: The loss of so many venues. It seems like everyday there are fewer places to play, and some of those have been legendary venues.
Ryan: I feel like the KC metal scene is coming back it’s surprising when i thought it was dead. Now theres all these hella sweet bands.
What is currently in your heavy musical rotation?
Kük: Weedeater, Bongripper, Conan, Crowbar, local brothers of ours Buzzard Fight, Orphans Of Doom and Hössferatu!
Ryan: Man I listen to everything but when I’m driving lately I can’t stop listening to Tons lately though!
What was the best advice you’ve ever been given as a musician?
Kük: Always be gracious and humble, and there is no expiration date on disrespect!
Ryan: Our old drummer always said KISS (keep it simple stupid).
What are your guilty pleasures?
Kük: Peanut M&M’s and vintage B rated horror/monster movies, street tacos!
Ryan: Butt stuff and step moms hahahahaha.
Can you say something more about the music scene in Kansas City?
Kük: We are from Kansas City, MO and the heavy music scene here is thriving, lots of great heavy bands and you never know, T Swift just might be at a show
Ryan: Taylor Swift! Let’s gooooo!!!!
Where can we see you live this year (concerts/tours)?
Kük: You can catch us in Kansas City and around the region this year, we plan on writing and recording late November/December for another EP for release early 2025!
Ryan: Chicago is calling our name. Link us up!!
What are your plans for the future as a band?
Kük: Continue to do what we do, try to write heavy music and play live as much as can!
Ryan: Keep doin the damn thang!!!
How can people best support your band?
Kük: Follow us on our socials, help spread the word about our band, buy our music and merch, come to our shows.
Ryan: Buy merch!!! We love art and are always releasing new stuff and keeping it fresh! It helps fund our studio ventures
