Doomed Confessionary: Nicholas Wong (Marijannah)

Marijannah is a stoner/doom metal band from Singapore with members of The Caulfield Cult, Wormrot, Abolition A.D. & more.

Founded in 2016, Marijannah consists of Nicholas Wong (drums, vocals), Rasyid Juraimi (guitar, vocals), Nicholas Ng (guitar) and Muhammad Azri (bass).

“Sitting squarely at the center of the Venn diagram for fans of Black Sabbath and Harry Potter, you will find Marijannah, the Singapore stoner metal quartet featuring members of Wormrot and the Caulfield Cult. Their action-packed debut album, »Til Marijannah«, features four blazing epics that inject doom metal with a healthy dose of classic rock swagger.” – Pitchfork.com

Can you say a few words about your band?
We’re a doom metal band from Singapore, the country that prosecutes stoners like no other, and we embrace melody and harmony.

What was the biggest challenge for the band?
Being one of the very very very few stoner/doom bands in this country and region.

What can you be most proud of so far?
Every piece of music we’ve ever put out is kickass.

What was your biggest regret?
Being as inactive as we are but I guess being this slow is part of the game.

What was the best concert/tour so far and why?
Southeast Asian tour with Potion back in 2018 when we’ve just started, the reception for that as a new band felt very warms.

What was the biggest surprise on the music scene for you?
That no one else picked up this style of music after us.

What is currently in your heavy musical rotation?
I listen exclusively to 80s synth-pop and ballads and 90s and 00s r&b and pop so M2M, Heart, Foreigner, All Saints.

What was the best advice you’ve ever been given as a musician?
Nobody ever bothered.

What are your guilty pleasures?
Left wing politics.

Can you say something more about current music scene in Singapore?
Not very involved so I’m not sure.

Where can we see you live this year (concerts/tours)?
Nowhere, we’re inactive.

What are your plans for the future as a band?
Maybe one day we will make music again.

How can people best support your band?
Buy our stuff on Bandcamp.

Do you have any message for your listeners?
Thank you for making a part of our lives better than expected.
