Sounds For The Lost Generation

Doomed Confessionary: Sofia May (Regina)

Ethereal yet heavy. Dark and atmospheric. Raw as well as distorted. Regina is an alternative metal band from Montevideo, Uruguay, that has shaken up their local scene with their intriguing sound. Redefining concepts of what a band from a small city should be like, they’ve incorporated their local roots into a big, trascendental sound like no other. Currently working on their debut album, an ambitious and conceptual work that ventures into darker, denser, more atmospheric and heavier territories.

Regina consists of Sofia May (vocals, keyboards), Valeria Sarro (vocals, guitars), Agustin Sogliano (bass) and Ignacio Hourcade (drums).

Can you say a few words about your band?
Regina is an alternative rock/metal band based in Montevideo, Uruguay, currently working on our debut album, to be released later this year. Our sound is usually described as “ethereal, dark and heavy”.

What was the biggest challenge for the band?
Definitely recording our debut album! It’s a very ambitious and conceptual work, and we are really proud of it. But it definitely was a challenge for us as an independent band.

What can you be most proud of so far?
This might be repetitive, but again, our album! 🙂 It’s currently in the mixing stage, and we can’t wait for everyone to hear it.

What was your biggest regret?
This is personal, but not forming a band and releasing music sooner. It took a bit of work on my self-esteem to start releasing music for me. I’m glad I eventually did it though 🙂

What was the best concert/tour so far and why?
We really loved performing at our local “Wacken Metal Battle” (in Uruguay) last year. We weren’t expecting to be selected as there honestly is a lot of talent in our country. But luckily we were, and we got to perform with some of our favorite local metal bands, which we admire a lot. We didn’t win a spot in the Wacken Metal Festival, but we loved performing there as the audience was pretty big and we got to perform for many new faces, which we loved!

What was the biggest surprise on the music scene for you?
In our local music scene, there are SO many amazing bands for such a small country 🙂

What is currently in your heavy musical rotation?
Right now, Spiritbox’s »Tsunami Sea«.

What was the best advice you’ve ever been given as a musician?
Honestly, networking. Being a part of your local music scene is the best thing you can do.

What are your guilty pleasures?
Musically, I don’t have any guilty pleasures. I will enjoy any Gojira album as much as Sabrina Carpenter’s, and everything in between 🙂

Can you say something more about current music scene in Montevideo?
It is very vibrant and mostly driven by independent efforts. For such a small city and country with a small population, there is a pretty big music scene and lots of talented acts. In Montevideo, the city where we live, there are at least 5 gigs happening every weekend and lots of music genres to choose from.

Where can we see you live this year (concerts/tours)?
We usually play live in our hometown once per month. Hopefully, after the release of our debut album, we can tour a bit and play other cities.

What are your plans for the future as a band?
As I mentioned previously, we will be releasing our debut album in a few months, and hopefully after that we can tour a bit and play some of our favorite local festivals.

How can people best support your band?
The biggest form of support is through Bandcamp. All of our releases are listed there and we also have a few merch items for sale! But of course just by streaming and sharing our music you can support us as well.

Do you have any message for your listeners?
Just a big thank you!! If you liked our last two singles, stay tuned for more to come very soon.
