Trondheim, Norway based rockers Maldito have just released their second album »Contact Light« on May 24th, 2024, available now on vinyl, CD and all streaming platforms.

The follow-up to the debut album »Heartlands« is ready, and the band is heading in a new and exploratory direction. The band is playing more with sound, time signatures, and genres than before, while still maintaining a strong foothold in the blues rock they originated from.

Maldito are Vegard Ring (vocals, guitar), Bendik Brevik (guitar), Jon Olav Alstad (bass) and Gard Rognskog (drums).

Can you say a few words about your band?
Maldito is a rock band based in Norway, formed in Liverpool, where we met as students at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. Drawing inspiration from various genres, we blend rock, prog, and blues into our unique live expression. Since we started in 2015, we have played countless concerts and festivals, touring both domestically and internationally. Our debut album, »Heartlands«, was released in the spring of 2021.

What was the biggest challenge for the band?
The biggest challenge for Maldito right now is getting enough gigs to promote our new album. Since the pandemic, it has become more difficult for bands at our level to get gigs at festivals. It seems that the biggest artists get most of the jobs, at least in the Norwegian music scene. There’s not much earnings in streaming; most of our income comes from being on the road touring. We really hope our new album can help us get more gigs.

What can you be most proud of so far?
We are most proud of our experience performing live. Before the pandemic, we played at least 80 to 90 shows a year. Doing so, we’ve become an extremely tight and experienced live band. We also record everything live in the studio to keep the magic.

What was your biggest regret?
When we were studying our last year in Liverpool, we were invited to do a tour in Germany. At the same time, we were invited to meet Paul McCartney in a private songwriting session. It was a hard decision, but we ended up doing the tour and promoting the band. It’s not exactly something we regret – the tour was amazing. I think we made the right decision.

What was the best concert/tour so far and why?
There are so many great concerts to choose from! In 2023, we supported Grammy award winners Larkin Poe from the US. It was an amazing concert with about a thousand people in the audience.

What was the biggest surprise on the music scene for you?
The biggest surprise has been the rapid rise of independent artists thanks to social media and streaming platforms. It’s amazing how the landscape has shifted, allowing more voices to be heard.

What is currently in your heavy musical rotation?
We like to listen to most genres, including classic rock, modern alt-rock, progressive rock, and new pop. There are also lots of great singer-songwriters from Norway we listen to. The Norwegian band Motorpsycho has been a huge inspiration for the album. And I think I speak for everyone when I say that The Beatles have a big place in our hearts.

What was the best advice you’ve ever been given as a musician?
The best advice we received was to stay true to our sound and not chase trends. Authenticity resonates more deeply with listeners, and it’s important to create music that we genuinely believe in.

What are your guilty pleasures?
We don’t have any guilty pleasures. Some of us like to listen to old country music once in a while. I don’t see that there’s anything wrong with that.

Can you say something more about the music scene in Trondheim / Norway?
The music scene in our city is vibrant and diverse. There’s a supportive community of artists and venues that foster creativity and collaboration. It’s a great place for emerging bands to grow and thrive.

Where can we see you live this year (concerts/tours)?
This summer, we will mainly focus on performing in Norway. At the moment, we are planning a trip to Germany, but it’s still not set when and where yet. Keep an eye on our social media for announcements and dates – we’re excited to bring our music to more fans live.

What are your plans for the future as a band?
Our plans include releasing new music, expanding our tour dates, and connecting with more fans worldwide.

How can people best support your band?
People can support us by streaming our music, coming to our shows, buying our merch, and spreading the word about Maldito. Every bit of support helps us continue to create and perform.

Do you have any message for your listeners?
Your support means everything, and we can’t wait to share more music and memories with you.
