Stuporous is a Dutch/Belgian blackened doom band with members from the Dutch Zwotte Kring black metal collective.

Stuporous is the brainchild of Floris Velthuis who has a history in black metal going back to the 90’s. He previously flirted with blackened doom with his non-orthodox black metal band Meslamtaea. Trumpeter Izzy Op de Beeck (who’s also part of Meslamtaea) plays in various jazz-noir projects. Doom therefore is familiar territory to him and he adds a special vibe to the music. With vocalist Devi, who works in psychiatry, the formation is complete.

The lyrics are about mental disorders and depression, based on true events in the psychiatric facility. Devi’s vocals, at times schizophrenic, are making the listener identify with the suffering persons that the music is about.

The album »Asylum’s Lament« sounds heavy, nostalgic, and melancholic. Dreamlike, but not a pleasant dream, the listener drowns into a mental nightmare maelstrom.

The music is characterised by low-pitched guitars, slow pounding drums and atmospheric keys. What is special about Stuporous are the frequently used trumpets & horns, and the extremely schizophrenic vocals that are somewhere between timid and very aggressive. The lyrics are about mental disorders, based on true events in a psychiatric facility. »Asylum’s Lament« can be described as a melancholic and intense trip in a troubled mind.
