Sans Lumière was created in 2021 by songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Maarten van Helden located in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Post-metal, sludge and stoner influences are combined into a massive, hard-hitting sound that belies the fact that only one person is responsible for the Wall of Sound.

Dark instrumental music with abrasive melodies are alternated with head-nodding riffs and soundscapes shaped by moments of dark brooding doom. Reminiscent of Neurosis, And So I Watch You From Afar and Cult Of Luna.

In the late 90’s he played in psychedelic and stonerrock bands that shared the stage with bands as 35007, 7Zuma7 and Peter Pan Speedrock. During the 00’s he was part of the alternative metal band Sk;rl. Sk;rl co-toured with Textures, opened for Mastodon and played major clubs in the Netherlands. After Maarten left sk;rl, he stopped making music and had a mastering studio for several years.

In 2021 he started playing again. As an experiment he captured ideas with scarce tools, which resulted in the album The Olm. In 2022, A year without a summer, clearer defined the style of Sans Lumière. With it’s 2023 release of the »Mirin Dajo Prophecy« the sound, songs and visuals came to full form. Every aspect was done by a single person, delving deeper and deeper in crafting a diversified yet unison experience. Granting a true insight into the creator’s mind.
