Press Release: Cervus releases their debut album »Axis«

On Friday November 13th the Amsterdam-based psychedelic stoner rock band Cervus releases their debut album »Axis«. This is their fourth official release. The album contains 10 new songs, spanning 55 minutes. »Axis« takes elements of their previous EPs »Ignis« (2021) and »Shifting Sands« (2023) but delves deeper with massive, crushing riffs, compelling rhythms and more dynamic song structures.

The choice for the title of »Axis« is not coincidental; Beside the fact that this album represents their first full work and a huge milestone, several band members have lost a parent during the making of this album. When you lose a loved one, it can feel like your whole world has shifted on its axis. Because of these unfortunate circumstances, the album is heavily marked with themes of loss, grief and the fragility of life.

The album starts off with a short, slightly disorientating soundscape before opener »Black Masquerade« erupts with a huge lumbering main riff. Halfway through, the song takes an almost dreamy, atmospheric turn before kicking back into gear towards a heavy riff-filled finale. This song encapsulates the band’s mission statement for this album; more dynamics, more contrasts and thicker, fuller guitar work.

After the opening salvo of »Black Masquerade«, »Burning Legacy« and »Giantess« the band takes a deliberate step back with the darkly melancholic and folk-tinged Fading From View. What followsnext is the instrumental »Roamer«, a symbolic midpoint in the journey of »Axis«. Its heavy, psychedelic and panoramic character provides somewhat of a breather before what is yet to come.

Because when »Roamer« eventually quietly fades, the second half of the album is about to begin. And it kicks off ferociously with the suffocating and claustrophobic »Harbinger Of Rain«, two blistering minutes of hectic, grimy, pounding desert punk. The message is clear; the descent has started, past the point of no return.

In stark contrast to this we have »Faces Of Evil« and »Beneath The Waves«, two 8-minute heavy psych epics, back to back, full of unexpected twists and turns and massive, monumental riffs. After this 16-minute diptych the closer »Remember My Name« serves as a welcome reprieve.

This song, like a lucid dreamvision, starts off quiet and composed, before slowly building towards a grand and moving climax. With »Golden Arms«, »Axis« draws to a close and ends on a small, intimate note. This song is a psychedelic-tinged folksong and an ode to the late mother of singer and vocalist Tom van der Linden.

The album has been recorded under their own management in the WOODROX in Amsterdam. Drummer Rogier Henkelman has produced, recorded and mixed the album and the mastering was done by Karl Daniel Lidén (Greenleaf, Dozer, Lowrider). The cover artwork was designed by the band and photographed by bassist Tom Mourik.
