Hidas is an instrumental trio from Munich that is rooted in doom metal but likes to push boundaries. The band was formed in spring 2023, but Flo Bätz (guitar), Christoph Mühlbauer (drums) and Richard Noyn (bass) have already played together in various bands and have been making music together for years. This is evident in how tight they are as a unit, which is best experienced at one of their live concerts. Hidas not only manage to close the supposed gap in the sound and storytelling of an instrumental band through their intelligent songwriting, but also turn it into their strength.

»A Sense Of Impending Doom« is Hidas’ second studio album and shows the trio from a harder and darker side. »A Sense Of Impending Doom« describes the feeling that something fatal, something terrible is about to happen, and with this theme, it is both a very personal album and one that describes the state of the world.

Hidas open their sophomore album with »Dynger«, a powerful, doom-laden smash hit, which, with its glacial slowness, is the song with the strongest stoner factor the band has written to date. But »Splint« immediately dispels the stoner romanticism and sweeps up the remains. Here, Hidas’ 90s Swedish death metal influences clearly come to the fore and whip the listener through almost 4 minutes of purgatory.

This is followed by »ASOID«, the album’s title track. In keeping with the core theme, the trio leads us through funeral doom soundscapes of despair that fl ow slowly and tenaciously like black molasses.

Side B begins like a punch in the face with a black metal riff and bludgeoning, which then takes on a fat groove that flows back into funeral doom sounds, only to pick up speed again. »Vakuum« is Hidas’ longest and most versatile song to date, showcasing the band’s potential and proving that they cannot simply be pigeonholed.

»Cisza« seems like a little breather, a short interlude that nevertheless packs a punch and thrives on a floating atmosphere and strong percussion. »The Riddle« concludes the album and is an ode to true metal, giving the listener an ending with a fist raised to the sky after the heaviness of the album.
