With their latest release, »Reverie«, bunsenburner embarks on a bold new chapter in their ongoing journey of musical exploration. Released on January 17, 2025 via Bensnburner Records, the album delivers a masterful blend of raw creativity, genre-defying soundscapes, and emotional depth. Recorded live over four days at Huji Maja Studios in Freiburg, Germany, »Reverie« captures the collective synergy of bunsenburner’s five members, whose diverse backgrounds – spanning black metal, jazz, and beyond – fuel their massive sound.

Rooted in themes of letting go – of expectations, fears, and constraints – the album traverses a rich musical landscape. It combines the crushing weight of sludge, stoner & doom metal with delicate ambient textures, cinematic spaghetti western, and bold experimental sound design, creating immersive soundscapes that feel both spontaneous and intricately crafted.

Lucid dreaming inspired their haunting take on Tosca Tango Quartet’s »Ballade Four«, while their cover of Flying Lotus’ »Zodiac Shit« channels the band’s admiration for cutting-edge musical innovation. Originals like »TORO« draw from the spontaneous methods of German painter K.O. Götz, reflecting the group’s embrace of intuition, while »Golden Shower« captures a moment of playful imperfection during the recording process, reminding the band to let go of creative rigidity.

The live recording process brought a raw urgency to the album’s sound, preserving the authenticity of bunsenburner’s collective chemistry while pushing their creative boundaries.

About bunsenburner:

bunsenburner is a constantly evolving musical collective that began as the brainchild of bassist and producer Ben Krahl in 2012. Originally a one-man project, bunsenburner has since grown into an ever-expanding hive mind of world-class musicians, blending diverse influences to create a sound that defies conventional genre boundaries.

What started as a bedroom experiment quickly transformed into a collaborative effort as Krahl surrounded himself with like-minded artists from the realms of metal, jazz, and beyond. This dynamic approach has allowed bunsenburner to explore vast and vibrant soundscapes, characterized by their intricate compositions and an uncompromising commitment to artistic expression.

Now operating as a quintet, bunsenburner thrives on spontaneity and live energy. Their music is always recorded in full-band/live settings with few arrangements or overdubs, capturing the raw interplay between musicians. The result is a holistic, immersive listening experience that ranges from powerful, mountain-moving intensity to delicate, feather-light intricacy.
