Utopia Union is the trio of Hanno Janssen, Matthias Dabrowski, and Johnny Röhl from northwest Germany. Their music blends atmospheric and repetitive soundscapes, drawing inspiration from the ’70s krautrock and modern post-rock. The driving force of the project is the vision of a utopian, alternative reality -only by imagining a different world can we begin to perceive and live differently. The name “Union” plays on two meanings: as “association”, it captures the quiet sense of belonging among like-minded people, while as “labor union”, it represents the determined and combative pursuit of this utopian ideal. This duality -gentle yet demanding – is mirrored in their music.
In 2018, they released their debut EP »Innenleben«, followed by Escapism in 2020. Both were premiered by the highly regarded YouTube channel “worldhaspostrock” and received enthusiastic feedback. Fans commented, “Sounds like an Explosions In The Sky track… that’s why it’s staying on my playlist!” and “7:48 AM, awake all night again, sitting here watching the shafts of light from the sunrise peek through my blinds while listening to this…” Another added, “That first track is one of my all-time favorites. I love when post-rock sounds bright and hopeful.”

In 2022, their track »Kraft der Vernunft« was released on the German digital label “poly unique music.” In 2024, Utopia Union is set to drop their debut full-length album »Peak Experiences«, also via “poly unique music.” Their sound has drawn comparisons to Maserati, Earth, Delving, and Kokomo, with motorik beats and monotonous loops echoing the work of German pioneers Can and Neu!. The band recorded the album live without click tracks or headphones, adding occasional overdubs. This organic process gives »Peak Experiences« a warm, lush, and powerful sound. The track »Longyearbyen« is a reinterpretation of the original by Swoer, and the synth solo on »Dunkelziffer« was played by Chris Breuer of Zahn and Death By Gong.
