“Independent, playful, wild, danceable, groovy, loud yet also laid-back, fresh, contemporary” – there have been many attempts to put Tommy And The Teleboys’ debut album »Gods, Used, In Great Condition« into words, but for many, this wildly playful jumble was hard to pin down.
Like its predecessor, »Bits And Pieces, Poorly Explained« is brimming with self-confidence and creativity. Recorded by the band themselves in a variety of rehearsal spaces and studios, it was then mixed over many months in three different apartments and towns. The Televersum is DIY in its purest form. Their sound feels like it was just invented and eschews any retro elements. Musically, the album is a feverish collage of garage rock, krautrock, psychedelia, fuzz, post-punk, and electronica – full of genre-hopping, irony, and playful escalation.
Magenta-purple-yellow cover art, white cowboy hats, elegantly sipping rosé wine – but then, things get loud. Tommy And The Teleboys love to tease, take unexpected turns, and then strike with precision. The songs often start off soft and invite you to swing along, only to then set off landmines and blast you with crashing walls of guitar. But their second album also moves away, in terms of content, from the grand conceptual arcs of its predecessor and focuses more on the small details of everyday life: love, art, insecurities, lethargy, dates, bassists, smoking, FOMO, or simply a good evening with the right people. A potpourri of observations, thoughts, and moods. Poorly explained…
Having first come together somewhere in “Central Germany” before bursting onto the scene in Berlin, Mainz, or Halle, this band remains a musical bond of friendship. Their debut album earned top marks and won over listeners across genres. They quickly took the stage everywhere from the smallest clubs to established festivals – and founded and curated their own yearly festival, the “Telefest”.
The new album by Tommy And The Teleboys offers even more variety than its predecessor, and you can hardly get enough of it. »Everyday« starts off cheerful and upbeat in a summer shirt, until it rips open to reveal its hairy chest and really rocks out. It satirizes hustle culture, Dubai dreams, and mindset optimization, somewhere between ’90s alternative rock and internet brain damage. »Atmen« is a menacingly evil headbanger (in German). »Carl Mc Pautney« has inhaled garage rock and is an anthem for all bassists. »OK Hole« transforms feelings of love into a sweet, chaotic ketamine high and blends folk with garage-psych to make the guitar excesses sound even louder. And »Pretty Nice To Meet You« tells of a fleeting encounter that lasts only for the length of a song – somewhere between krautrock, noise, and wryly grinning rock ‘n’ roll romance.
