Doomed Nation

Sounds For The Lost Generation

Introducing: Four-piece psychedelic doom/stoner/grunge/hard rock band Calma from Hamburg, Germany!

The Hamburg, Germany based four-piece Calma seems to be a bit shy and/or out of privacy, because cease information about the band are really few and far between. At least their first names (Alex, Mat, Stefan and Costa) and the fact that some of them originally came from Kiel and Bimöhlen, can be found out.

Calma are eternity quartet from Hamburg who released their debut album »Black Jesus And White Lines« in 2019. For a debut album, it is very direct and purposeful, and convinces with its clever songwriting and enough variety to keep the discerning stoner in a good mood. »Black Jesus And White Lines« invites you to repeated listening, because there is much to discover on it.

Calma – The band

We are grains of dust, spread out on a sphere that races around a fireball at 30 kilometers per second. Once this brute realization has seeped from the mind into the stomach and has been kneaded into feeling, you simply have to express it. And that doesn’t work at all with fluffy beats, which at most correspond to the degree of excitement of not having been asked for the payback card. No, heavy equipment is needed here. Served by heavy guys. Elephantine guitars and heavy bass, thrashed to the front by drums from the deep. Bad luck if you don’t feel it.

Calma – The sound

No one likes to be pigeonholed, but let’s assume they’ve made it with Calma after a lot of tugging: What sound emerges from this pigeonhole now? No question. A damn loud one.

Imagine if Jesus Lizard, Soundgarden, Truly and Mudhoney booked a studio on the same day as Monster Magnet and Cathedral. But instead of pushing and shoving, everyone sits down with a beer and listens to Krautrock-World.com. And that’s exactly until someone calls out: “Guys, let’s all record a Danzig cover album together now”. If that would happen, the result would sound exactly like Calma’s debut »Black Jesus And White Lines«.

Now in all modesty. Pull in your fingers and close the drawer.

Calma – The calm and the storm.
