Italian cosmic couriers San Leo keep traveling! »Al.ay« is the 3rd single taken from San Leo’s upcoming album »Aves Raras«.
»Al.ay« pays homage to free jazz legend Albert Ayler. It’s the equivalent of a solar flare, a radical statement from San Leo, marking their territory where any song structure melts and turns back into pure sonic energy. Lashing cymbals, walls of guitars and shimmering synthesizers, an aural assault in perpetual search of catharsis in the eye of the storm. An underlying calm and soothing tonal soundscape, in contrast with the more impactful sonic elements.
San Leo’s fifth album »Aves Raras« is a resounding statement of intent, arguably their most accomplished and well-rounded effort so far. The usual ingredients that constitute their unique ‘mantra core/trance noise’ sound are all here – hectic drumming that pulls no punches and leaves no respite, ecstatic guitar crescendos, reflective stasis, eschatological drones – only this time, everything is driven to the nth degree. Since its inception in 2013, the duo has been adding ever more layers to an increasingly rich and wide range of textures, simultaneously unveiling a stronger and stronger cinematic feel, adjacent to and resonant with their favorite visions (from 40s noir to 80s horror, from old and new western to sci- fi from anywhere, and everything in between). Clocking in at around 38 minutes, »Aves Raras« has got it all: analog slags, tribal ritual music as if it were composed and conducted by H.P. Lovecraft, wicked guitar riffs, shimmering layers of synths.
»Aves Raras« was recorded by Andrea Scardovi at Duna Studio. Drums recorded by Yuri Pierini at Blue Audio Studio. Additional recording by San Leo.
Mixed by Francesco Donadello (Grammy and Emmy-winning producer and sound engineer; he worked with musicians such as Jóhann Jóhannsson and Hildur Guðnadóttir) at Kalimba Studio and Synecdoche Music Research, Berlin.
Mastered by Giovanni Versari at La Maestà (Muse).
Biography:
San Leo is an Italian experimental rock duo formed in 2013 in Rimini by inserirefloppino (drums) and m tabe (guitar, etc). A trip through hypnotic grooves and visions, between incendiary intensity and minimalism, led by sonic shamans searching for catharsis into the storm. Mantra-core. Trance-noise. After playing for years in the local scene with various bands and solo projects, exploring various musical territories (from psychedelic folk to metal, krautrock, ambient, noise, free-jazz), inserirefloppino and m tabe formed San Leo with the intent of pushing their minimal instrumentation of guitar and drums to the extreme, generating a powerful and evocative style, mixing glacial solemnity and primordial spontaneity. In 2021 San Leo was invited to play at LeGuessWho? in Utrecht. In 2022 was another leap forward for the band, adding a new array of sounds (samples, keys, vocals) and sharing stages with international acts like… and you will know us by the Trail Of Dead, Ecstatic Vision, and more extensively touring with Unsane for the final leg of their European tour.
