Italian instrumental post-metal act Threestepstotheocean have announced their upcoming new studio album »Death Of Permanence«, which is set to be released on October 16 via Subsound Records. Alongside the announcement, Threestepstotheocean unveil the track & video »What Went Wrong«, offering the first glimpse into the world of »Death Of Permanence«.
The song marks a clean break from the past, streamlining the songwriting to focus entirely on sound.
The atmosphere is inspired by dark American underground hip-hop (akin to Dälek and Moodie Black): drums and bass mimic a classic “loop” approach, while synths build increasingly intense layers and the guitar emerges only halfway through with a single melody.
In line with this hip-hop/industrial urgency, the track centers on the vocal sample of »What Went Wrong«, a powerful and deeply personal poem written and spoken by Larry Stromberg. The audio was sourced from the archives of Prison Radio, a US independent multimedia production company that amplifies the voices of incarcerated individuals to challenge a discriminatory system. What Went Wrong. Three words that resonate powerfully every time we look at the world outside.
»Death Of Permanence« marks the return of Threestepstotheocean, six years on from their last studio record. The new album stretches and deepens the band’s sonic reach, drawing on influences that extend well beyond the purely musical – while holding firm to a sound identity shaped across two decades of activity. At the same time, it enacts a deliberate, gradual shedding of what came before: not nostalgia, not repetition, but an unrelenting forward motion.
The record is rooted in the idea that much of what we consider stable or permanent is bound to shift, dissolve, or disappear – places, beliefs, relationships, the worlds we build around ourselves. The album observes this process with open eyes, accepting change as an inevitable part of human experience. It is, unmistakably, a rite of passage – toward a direction still unwritten, only partially legible, yet one whose emotional and existential toll runs deep beneath the surface.
Throughout this process of transformation, the band steps away from pure instrumentalism on multiple occasions, reaching outward through collaboration – a lived expression of a DIY ethic grounded in exchange and human connection. The record features the voice of sardinian performer Dalila Kayros, songwriter Conny Ochs, a vocal sample from Larry Stromberg, and the instrumental orchestrations of Moonlit.
»Death Of Permanence« was recorded and mixed by Stefano Santi at SPVN Studio in February and March 2026, with additional recording by Francesco Tosi. Mastering was handled by Giovanni Versari at La Maestà Mastering. The cover features Alexander Krack’s photograph “The Treatment”, with artwork and design by Riccardo Giacomin.
