Bongrot is a one-man sludge/doom metal project based out of the rural foothills of Pinnacle, North Carolina, closely tied to the underground music scene of nearby Winston-Salem.

The project is the solo endeavor of a musician and professional tattoo artist Brandon Finney, who handles all songwriting, instrumentation, and recording.

Before adopting the name Bongrot, the project was briefly known as Winterthorn. Finney’s musical roots trace back to playing in deathcore bands around the Winston-Salem area during his youth.

As a D.I.Y. project, the early material was written under highly restrictive conditions. Tracks like »Green Smoke« began as simple phone recordings years before Finney acquired proper home studio equipment.

Writing the EP »Tomb Of The Witch« for Winterthorn marked a major turning point in refining the project’s sound. Bongrot released a definitive studio effort titled »Ashes Of Excess« in June 2026.

The music serves as a raw outlet for Finney’s personal experiences, with lyrical themes heavily focusing on addiction, religious indoctrination, childhood trauma, depression, as well as the culture and struggles of rural Appalachia.

Finney continues to write new material with plans for future EP releases leading up to a full-length album. Long-term goals for the project include assembling a full live lineup to take Bongrot on the road for regional and national touring.
