The idea for Thorns Of Ruins started back in 2022, when some of the songs that would become Ildfar’s second album, »Nattemørkets kall«, did not fit within universe of Ildfar. Instead of throwing these songs away, Thorns Of Ruins was formed. As time went on, it became increasingly important to create a clear distinction between the two projects, and it eventually became natural for Thorns Of Ruins to forge its own path and distance itself somewhat from traditional black metal. Some demo songs were recorded around 2019 (later released under the name of Thorns Of Ruins), while the self titled debut album was self-released in the spring of 2025.
After the process with the first album was over, project immediately started writing the next album. And with that in mind, and with the goal of making an album that would define Thorns Of Ruins for the future, the inspiration and joy of playing were there to create an album that musicians consider a very strong second album and a big step from debut album. Guys have many ideas and riffs/melodies lying around, but with a slightly different musical expression. It was a liberation to let go of all musical barriers and just make an album independent of genre and what others might think. Thorns Of Ruins moved unconsciously towards old bands like Cemetary, Tiamat, Anathema and Paradise Lost. Not necessarily their musical style but their way of making gloomy/melodic and beautiful melodies. But with its own defined path and their own twist on the genre. And while still retaining some black metal references in the music…
About one and a half year after the release of debut album, Thorns Of Ruins is back with second full-length. Leaving a well recieved black metal album behind, project are back with an album exploring other musical directions. Nine melancholic, atmospheric and melodic songs circling around the styles of doom metal and death metal, blended with Thorns Of Ruins original twist. Expect great melodies, clean vocals, and haunting guitar riffs! Recorded and mixed at DownFall studio. Mastered by Tom Kvålsvoll at Kvalsonic Lab. All music and lyrics by Thomas Aamodt.
