Norwegian doom-metal band Death Of Giants has released a new music video for their striking cover of Iron Maiden’s »Only The Good Die Young«, daring to transform the cherished classic song into a somber and sorrowful epic track.

Originally featured on their 2023 album »Ventesorg« and being escribed by No Clean Singing as “slow and dreamlike,” the band’s take on »Only The Good Die Young« channels frontman Morten Søbyskogen’s personal loss and the thematic weight of the album. Written to process the death of his wife to brain cancer, »Ventesorg« – titled after the Norwegian word for “anticipatory grief” – is an intense meditation on mortality.

Angry Metal Guy noted the record’s “profound emotional resonance,” calling the vocal performances raw and versatile, from “gut-wrenching gutturals to operatic cleans.” The combination of piano, strings, and crashing chords adds to the rich atmosphere, creating a dynamic that is both fragile and powerful. The music was produced by Øyvind Voldmo Larsen at Lionheart Studio in Oslo, while mastering was done by Markus Teske at Bazement Studio in Germany.

The video, released on August 29, 2024, combines live footage with evocative imagery, amplifying the track’s themes of loss. Søbyskogen explains: “I wanted to reshape this song into something that reflected my experience with grief. This video captures different aspects of grief like confusion and denial. »Only The Good Die Young« is stating the unfairness of all lives taken too soon.”

This new release is highly recommended for fans of My Dying Bride, Candlemass, and Woods Of Ypres.
