“Twin-guitar heavy 70s hard rock proto-metal with soaring lead vocals.”
When was the last time you heard someone really sing? San Francisco’s twin-guitar heavy rock juggernaut Older Sun has a velvet voice like no other in Kelsey Guntharp, and their string-slingers and grooving rhythm provide the fuel that all at once evokes Saxon’s tight riffing, Judas Priest’s aviator-donning anthems and Heart’s bottomless pocket. On their debut full-length »Dawn Of Darkness«, Older Sun bring listeners back to a time when bands couldn’t be pigeonholed into a two-word subgenre. The freedom heard on albums like Led Zeppelin’s »Physical Graffiti« or on Pentagram’s early demos shine through on »Dawn Of Darkness«, where dueling NWOBHM solos meet bouncing Motown beats, where jangling guitars charge with freight train bass and where Guntharp howls at the moon before letting us down easy.
Older Sun transports listeners to an era when “heavy” included shades of light and darkness, and that includes the peers they’ve shared a stage with. The likes of Lucifer, Kadavar, Grim Reaper and Ruby The Hatchet have all had evenings rounded out by a slamming Older Sun set, and »Dawn Of Darkness« is a vintage capture of the raw power they give off onstage. Their music has found homes in Thrasher Magazine and ESPN’s Real Street competition and it’s made its way all over the world from a variety of 7” and EP releases. With »Dawn Of Darkness« however, Older Sun makes their cinematic entrance with punchy moto-rockers, simmering acoustic-laced numbers and soaring epics. It’s the kind of adventure that albums used to take you on.
