»After Extinction« was written in two parts, the more pastoral beginning where I know André was listening to a lot of Vini Reily (Durutti Column) for those guitar flourishes and then into this big epic more metal over the top ending.” explains Terence Hannum talking about one of the key pieces on »End Terrain«. An album ender the band calls ‘a magnificent triumphant view of human extinction’ the lyrical inspiration of Hannum came from the modernistic literature. ‘I was inspired by the book of the same name »After Extinction« (Minnesota Press) which compiles diverse opinions of the Anthropocene age we’re in and what happens after we’re all gone.”

»End Terrain« is the group’s most direct and concise work to date. More complex and layered than anything in the prolific trio’s catalog, »End Terrain« is a concept album exposing a vision of a future earth consumed by waste. An apocalyptic landscape, inhabited by a generation who despise their parentage and a dying breed fully aware of the wasteland they have left. Mountains of trash and an uninhabitable planet, endless and dead. »End Terrain« is about inertia and regret, about the future and a mirror to the present, about mourning and extinction.

A seamless and harrowing blend of experimental, post-rock, and post-metal, »End Terrain« is the perfect manifestation of modern, forward-thinking experimental music pushed to a maximalist conclusion.

The trio of Locrian, comprised of André Foisy (Albany), Terence Hannum (Baltimore), and Steven Hess (Chicago), has garnered critical acclaim for their innovative approach to heavy music. As Marc Masters of Pitchfork noted, “Plenty of bands play music that sounds dark, but few can make every note bleed black and breathe smoke. Count Locrian as part of that select circle.” Lars Gotrich of NPR praised the group stating that “Locrian always wants to show us something new – or at least rearrange the context of what heavy means, or even what sound means,” and Jamie Ludwig of Noisey applauded the group for “masterfully conjuring and destroying alternate universes through music” with each of their releases providing “challenging sonic adventures and evocative perspectives on the physical state of the world around us.”

In the ever-evolving realm of extreme music, Locrian stands as a testament to the power of artistic exploration. Their geographical spread mirrors the expansive sonic landscapes they traverse, cementing their status as trailblazers in the avant-garde metal scene.

»End Terrain« was recorded and mixed by J. Robbins at Magpie Cage, mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege, and features artwork provided by Chris Dorland (“Untitled Skinwalker”).
