We Are Space Horses is a psychedelic rock band from Somerville, MA made up of singer/guitarist Kevin Vanderhoof, bassist Gabbi Vanderhoof, and drummer Eric Hochwald. We Are Space Horses formed in 2017 in Stroudsburg PA. Kevin was already involved in the Stroudsburg music scene playing bass for stoner/doom metal band King Dead, and he wanted to create his own project that displayed his love for 60s/70s psychedelic and progressive rock. There he met Gabbi, a talented bass player who has a love for indie and alternative rock.
Gabbi and Kevin relocated to Massachusetts where they met Eric Hochwald of Moon Machine in late 2018. Eric was quickly enamored by We Are Space Horses’ unique blend of styles. They began playing shows in the area, integrating into the local alternative and psychedelic rock scenes. The trio completed their first album, »Apologia« in 2023, combining original recordings done at Rock Hard studios in Stroudsburg with a self-produced drum recording. The album was mixed by Eric, and »Apologia« was released on December 29th, 2023.

The music on »Apologia« is more genre bending, dynamic, and brooding than the average psychedelic rock band, many of the track resembling “indie doom”. »Apologia« means “a formal defense of one’s opinions or actions”, so the lyrics touch on personal topics such as such as life after addiction, loss, religion, and childhood trauma. If most psych rock is “sunny”, »Apologia« would be the perfect psych album for the cold winter months.
