Austin heavy-psych power trio The Well officially released their highly anticipated full-length album, »…And Flames Ran Like Living Animals«, today via Spaceflight Records.

The new record marks a major sonic evolution for the band, testing the boundaries of their established dark mysticism and bluesy doom rock by weaving in elements of ’70s proto-metal, southern sludge, and psychedelic abstraction.

Formed in 2011, the band – featuring guitarist/vocalist Ian Graham, bassist/vocalist Lisa Alley, and drummer Jason Sullivan – has built a fierce reputation for blending knotty prog, punk, and classic doom metal. Born out of the collective desire for fringe music, cult horror films, and dark mysticism. However, their newest effort demonstrates a refusal to be pinned down by the constraints of a single genre.

Rather than merely reproducing their past formulas, The Well treats their signature heavy vocabulary as something porous. The 9-track record fluidly navigates an eclectic sonic landscape that spans 1970s proto-metal, southern sludge, occult imagery, heartbreak, sci-fi, and a chaotic energy the band playfully dubs “post-apocalyptic murder madness”.

“The Well is a little space inside of us,” says Ian Graham regarding the band’s creative mindset. “There, we kind of feed it ideas and it either accepts or rejects them. We’re trying to serve this thing, not a genre.”
