Zhaat – originally simply a fantasy word meant to reflect the music, without limitations and without value judgment, confusing, mystical. Only later did it become clear that the word comes from Arabic and means “essence” or is equated with “the innermost (core / soul / drive) of a being.” Coincidence? Fate? Curious, in any case, especially since the band draws on oriental scales, sounds, and images, happily transcending rigid boundaries not only musically but also artistically towards the Orient.
The Leipzig-based quartet has been developing its own sound since 2018. Experimental post-hardcore is woven with heavy psychedelic stoner rock to create a tapestry of sound that is striking in its color scheme. Occasional oriental melodies and rhythms create a mystically hypnotic mix that contrasts the heavy guitar walls with a certain lightness.

But all of this has nothing to do with musty, hippie-like “world music”; it’s epic, powerful, and full of contrasts. Floating psychedelic instrumentals, powerfully aggressive vocals, and then again, grooving like hell and heavy as fuck. Post-hardcore, alternative, stoner, math rock, doom, psychedelic? Soundscapes condense to atmospheric heights, oriental scales haunt in an alchemical manner, before the band’s pure energy sweeps you off your feet.
Zhaat took their time developing their style and sound. The artwork was created by drummer Nick Putzmann, using an illustration by Wilhelm Frederking, which isn’t the only connection to the world of art and graphics. Singer and guitarist Clemens Tremmel is an established visual artist and has had numerous exhibitions.
Consequently, the recordings were self-directed, until at the last moment they entered the studio with Coogan’s Bluff drummer Charlie Paschen, who did the final mixing, found the right balance, and decisively shaped the multifaceted character of the recording. Just as quickly – as the recordings were already swimming in the electroplating bath at the pressing plant – Noisolution came into play as a label. It seems that curious coincidences determine the band’s path and direction – or is there a grand, mystically obscure plan behind it? »Other Prophets« at least clearly reflects the essence and innermost core of the band. An exciting album that has its own moments, fresh colors and elements, and isn’t a rehash of the same old stoner desert fairytale.
