Sounds For The Lost Generation

Doomed Confessionary: Carlos Frías (Sangria)

Sangria is a sludge/doom metal band from Santiago, Chile. Formed in 2003, the trio consists of Carlos Frías (guitar, vocals), Osvaldo Frías (bass, vocals) and Pablo Benavides (drums).

Sangria returned with their new full-length album »Esclavo de la Ira«, released on August 25th, 2024 via Manifectation Prods. / Kuyen Producciones.

Can you say a few words about your band?
Sangria is a trio band formed in Santiago, Chile, with influences from Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus, EyeHateGod, The Obsessed, Spirit Caravan, Sleep, Pentagram, and Godflesh, among others. We always strive to achieve that authentic sound that defines the band. Each album has its own sound, shaped by the time of each recording, while preserving the DNA of our band.

What was the biggest challenge for the band?
Actually, recording this fourth album was a huge challenge. Initially, we were set to enter the studio when, in October 2018, the social uprising in Chile occurred, followed by the pandemic in 2020. After that, we faced difficulties with one of the band members that took a long time to resolve.
Finally, we were able to record the album this year and are very satisfied with the result.

What can you be most proud of so far?
We are proud to remain active as a band; we’ve been making noise in the underground scene for almost 20 years—it’s crazy! We do all this out of the need to express ourselves artistically and to feel fulfilled while doing it.

What was your biggest regret?
I wouldn’t say it’s a regret, but there were some confusing internal problems within the band that we could have been resolved differently. As I mentioned, it was confusing and led to a temporary departure of one member (which lasted a year). This also influenced the delay in recording »Esclavo de la Ira«, which we had been working on since 2018.

What was the best concert/tour so far and why?
Sharing the stage with EyeHateGod and Amenra was an incredible experience. Playing with such titans in these distant lands like Chile, where this musical genre isn’t mainstream, was really special.

What was the biggest surprise on the music scene for you?
Being able to see The Obsessed live with Wino on their South American tour was indeed a surprise for Sangria. Wino is a legend due to his career in many different bands and legacy.

What is currently in your heavy musical rotation?
Right now, I’m enjoying the new albums from Harvestman’s »Triptych Part One and Part Two«, Body Void’s »Atrocity Machine«, and Coffins’ »Sinister Oath«. I’m also intrigued by Sumac’s latest release, »The Healer«. Additionally, I’m looking forward to the upcoming album from Undercroft, a Chilean band that is reuniting after 20 years. I’ve also been listening to Sporae Autem Yuggoth’s 2023 album, »…However It Still Moved«.

What was the best advice you’ve ever been given as a musician?
Everyone’s experience of artistic expression is different. Life has naturally enriched my musicality, I am completely self-taught. This journey has helped me develop a sound in my mind and transform it into something twisted and raw. The secret is to enjoy it.

What are your guilty pleasures?
Tube amplifiers – listening to that valve tone is like hitting a wall! Nothing can compete with that, it’s wonderful! I also love analog pedals, modulations, and vinyl records.

Can you say something more about the music scene in Santiago?
IIII band is showcasing new and interesting sounds. Invitado de Piedra with their album »Uroboros« is one of the inactive bands that I’m currently listening to.

Where can we see you live this year (concerts/tours)?
We hope to have some dates in November and December, with a new lineup.

What are your plans for the future as a band?
We just want to continue making our horrendous and putrid “sludge” and keep creating our next album for 2025. We’ll keep active, playing and enjoying the music.
