In the past, six years without releasing a full album could have been a lifetime. But, nowadays, it is a good period to promote something, especially when it comes to material that is released physically and independently.
That is how long it took Fallen Idol, a heavy/doom metal band from São Paulo, to release their fourth album, »Weed And Black Candles«, which is now available for purchase. The album follows »Mourn The Earth«, which was released in 2018 and consolidated the band in the independent heavy music scene.
The justification, according to Márcio Silva, the band’s bassist, was that “in 2020 we had a CD practically ready to start recording, about 80%, including some new songs being played live. Then the pandemic came along, right? None of us were confined during the pandemic. For two years we barely saw each other in person, and those were the occasions when we preferred to drink and chat rather than worry about the band, after all, we couldn’t perform anyway…”

However, during this period, Fallen Idol didn’t stop releasing anything. In 2019, they released the EP »Fallen Idol Salutes Cirith Ungol – A Tribute To The Servants Of Chaos«, with three songs paying homage to the classic epic doom metal band, Cirith Ungol, and in 2020 they released »Disciples Of Evil – Black Sabbath Tribute«, with five compositions by the inventors of Heavy Metal. In 2019, the members also released the self-titled album of the side project Blasphematorium, which bets on a sound focused on speed/heavy metal with hints of black metal, that is, something quite different from the trio’s proposal.
With the easing of the pandemic, Fallen Idol began to rethink the album. “And naturally we started thinking about making a new album, but this time without deadlines, without rushing and as close as possible to a final product that would not have any details that would cause regret or the feeling that it could be better,” says the bassist. “With that, many songs emerged that replaced the previous ones that we thought could be improved. Anyway, from the CD that was almost ready in 2020 the only thing that remained was the song »Grey«.
»Weed And Black Candles« maintains the characteristics of Fallen Idol, obviously showing a natural evolution, both in terms of composition, performance and production. The work also shows the band more independent, where they only did not design the cover, which was done by Cesar Benatti. The production, mixing and mastering were done by guitarist, vocalist and keyboardist Rodrigo Sitta, who extracted the best sound from the trio, which is completed by drummer Ulisses Campos, to date. The album features a special appearance by cellist Cielinszka Wielewski on the track »Grey«.
