Canadian atmospheric death/doom metal band Norilsk share new lyric video for »La Fonte«!

Quebec, Canada based atmospheric death/doom metal band Norilsk premiere new lyric video for »La Fonte« taken from their fourth album, »Antipole«, out on February 7th, 2025 via Hypnotic Dirge Records.

The lyrics for »La Fonte« were some of the first to be written on »Antipole«.” comments vocalist Nic Miquelon. “The concept behind the song brings two ideas together: the idea of bearing a heavy weight, and the feeling of letting go. Coincidentally, in French, the word “fonte” has a double meaning: it can be translated by “cast iron” as well as “thaw”.”

Formed in 2012, Norilsk has been a stable of the Canadian underground doom scene for over a decade. With the release of »Antipole« earlier this year, the quartet has assembled a brand new chapter in the band’s progression. Norilsk is known for its unique take on winter doom, where cultures and nordicity provide a backdrop for addressing other deeper concepts such as loss, mental illness, or identity with the land. On »Antipole«, Norilsk teamed up with videographer Erik Labossiere to film two videos, »D’ombre et de glace« and »La Fonte«.

Commenting on »La Fonte«, Erik said: “Norilsk offered a unique opportunity I don’t often get to explore in this genre – telling a story inspired by classic literature that captures a specific atmosphere and emotion, while also ensuring the themes and character established in Norilsk’s greater musical catalogue. Having access to a location curated with history in mind and an actress excited to explore the space created a really ideal situation.”

Commenting further on the inspiration of the »La Fonte« video clip, vocalist Nicolas Miquelon says: “One direct source of inspiration was Leo Tolstoy’s short story Family Happiness. The mourning atmosphere of a 19th Century household over long and cold winter months, the wait and its uncertainty, and the hope for a release became the perfect setting for »La Fonte«. As water rises with the thaw, the idea of a release from a heavy weight carries many interpretations, including a doom scenario.”
