Life does not begin at conception. There is no Big Bang of consciousness. It’s fluid, like water pouring into a vessel. In death, the water slowly pours out, never ending.

Mar began as a slow convergence of two humans, K Belardinelli and Eiríkr Åsheim, in a windowless practice space in Olneyville, Providence, Rhode Island. Over the next decade, the two cultivated a hybrid of doom metal, post-hardcore, and noise, fluidly trading off guitars, drums, and vocals.

On their final album, »Ruin Is Rebirth«, Mar begins the slow process of decomposition. Who exactly is “in the band” is amorphous. Several new artists have entered: Rhea Ramakrishnan (Grudge), Lex Santiago (Sunrot), Gabriel Lozada (Lugie), and Bryan Funck (Thou).

Over eight crushing tracks, »Ruin Is Rebirth« tells a tale of homelessness, loss, and abuse – yet also of survival, power, and joy. It’s cathartic doom that’s refreshingly optimistic. Even on the punk anthem »Never Trust A Landlord«, K screams “Thank you to my thief. Now I am free.” It’s a whole-hearted goodbye to an era, accepting peacefully and without pain – What some call a “good death”.

On the final track, »Rebirth«, Eiríkr joins K as they shout in unison: “I do not want for what’s gone / I let it go, let it go.”

Eiríkr Åsheim played guitar and K Belardinelli played drums, except on »This Is The End« when Gabriel Lozada played drums on half the song and lead guitar on the other half, and »Never Trust A Landlord« when K played guitar and Gabriel played drums. K did the vocals, along with Rhea Ramakrishnan on »Venom«, Lex Santiago on »Not Afraid To Die«, Bryan Funck on »Ten Of Swords«, Gabriel on »Never Trust A Landlord«, and Eiríkr and Lex on »Ruin Is Rebirth«.
