Chicago trio Barren Heir have been spreading their brand of atmosludge since the release of their debut album »Tired Turns« in 2016. The band gained a reputation early on for their unsettling live shows and a unique sound that was tough to pin down. In 2022, drummer Adam Thorsness entered the fold, bringing a more aggressive playing style that helped redefine the band’s sound on their 2023 album, »Died Down«.
On November 7, 2025, Barren Heir will release their new album, »Far From«. A dynamic and intentionally shaped record, »Far From« is Barren Heir’s most fully realized release to date – a heavy, atmospheric work that blurs genre lines while carving out a sound that’s unmistakably their own. Across nine sprawling tracks, the band weaves together crushing heaviness, postmetal textures, and moments of groove-laden, blues-tinged guitar work – all grounded by introspective lyrics and a vocal delivery that favors emotional weight over genre convention.

From the pummeling opener »Meddling Body« (released as the first single in September) to the album’s more slow-burning, melodic moments, »Far From« offers a listening experience that’s as unsettling as it is immersive – a record that invites repeat listens, each time pulling the listener a little deeper.
