Doomed Confessionary: Lauri Moilanen (The Ghost I’ve Become)

The Ghost I’ve Become is a two-piece gothic/doom/death metal band from Oulu, Finland featuring Jomi Kyllönen (vocals) and Lauri Moilanen (guitars, bass, synth, drums, clean vocals).
The Ghost I’ve Become’s long-awaited debut album »Asylum« (out October 4th, 2024) takes the listener on a journey into the depths of a cracked and broken mind, where a storm of emotions and chaos reigns. This theatrical, powerful and endlessly dynamic album challenges the listener in many ways that are untraditional in the context of metal music, but also offers the familiar and reliable music known from the band’s previous releases »Hollow« and »Circle Of Sorrow«.
Can you say a few words about your band?
The Ghost I’ve Become is a Finnish metal band located in the town of Oulu. The band’s music combines doom metal, melodic metal and black metal with a wide range of beauty and despair. The band released their debut album »Asylum« 4 October 2024.
What was the biggest challenge for the band?
There have been some drop-outs from the core lineup in recent years (mostly due to Covid pandemic, which somehow disrupted the group). »Asylum« was recorded and produced by Jomi and Lauri, the current active members of The Ghost I’ve Become.
What can you be most proud of so far?
That we got »Asylum« out. It was a long process and at times we didn’t think it would ever happen.
What was your biggest regret?
Probably the fact that we didn’t produce this album before. The songs were ready years ago.
What was the best concert/tour so far and why?
The Ghost I’ve Become has never played live.
What was the biggest surprise on the music scene for you?
The fact that the melodic doom/death genre seems to be a thing of the past in Finland.
What is currently in your heavy musical rotation?
To be honest, I listen to very little metal music these days. I’m interested in the new Opeth album, though.
What was the best advice you’ve ever been given as a musician?
Don’t expect too much.
What are your guilty pleasures?
I don’t tend to feel guilty of my pleasures.
Can you say something more about current music scene in Oulu?
The Covid pandemic practically wrecked the metal music scene in Oulu, partly because so many venues disappeared. The space is now mainly for big and popular bands, not so much for underground genres.
Where can we see you live this year (concerts/tours)?
The Ghost I’ve Become does not play live. Lauri is playing actively live with his other band, Leskentuska, in Finland.
What are your plans for the future as a band?
The plans are currently on hold.
How can people best support your band?
By buying our music from Bandcamp and sharing our work with your friends.
Do you have any message for your listeners?
Thank you all for having trusted and listened to us for all these years. »Asylum« was published for you.
