Finland-based avant garde, noise-rock two piece NYOS have released their sixth full-length album, »Waterfall Cave Fantasy, Forever«, via Berlin’s Pelagic Records.
Combining mutant funk-punk looping akin to that of Battles and Tortoise with the cinematic, wall-of-sound, post-rock power of Russian Circles and Mogwai, »Waterfall Cave Fantasy, Forever« sees NYOS contrast their outstanding compositional complexity with free-jazz inspired improvisation. First explored on the band’s 2022 LP »Celebration«, the call and response creative freedom on »Waterfall Cave Fantasy, Forever« is NYOS reaching new heights of playful chaos.
NYOS came to be when, in 2012, guitarist Tom Brooke took the plunge and left his hometown of Leeds in the UK for Finland, with dreams of establishing his own recording studio, Tonehaven, which now doubles up as the band’s HQ. Before long, Tom crossed paths with drummer Tuomas Kainulainen who, having cut his teeth in the local punk scene, was ready to explore something new. The connection was instant, with the duo establishing their distinctive, restless blend of math-rock, prog and harsh noise and writing their debut release, 2015’s six-part single »Vltava«, within their first few practices.

The band haven’t stopped since then, from releasing six full-length albums and dozens of singles and EPs to playing hundreds of shows around the world with international contemporaries including Zeal & Ardor, Esben & The Witch and The Comet Is Coming. With almost a decade of ceaseless creativity under their belts, the band’s latest effort finds NYOS exploring their unique dynamic as a duo; combining sprawling guitar sounds, delicate cymbal work and a powerful use of space to capture the immediacy and intimacy of their live shows to spectacular effect.
Album track »Kintsugi Lifestyle« is the perfect representation of what makes NYOS such a force to be reckoned with, both on stage and on record. Just like the titular Kintsugi pottery style, in which broken artefacts are glued back together with gold, »Kintsugi Lifestyle« is the band celebrating the beauty in the chaos of construction with layers of hypnotic, looping guitar riffs laid down over a caterwaul of syncopated cymbal work and blast-beat drum breaks.
Already renowned for their inimitable control over guitar loops and polyrhythmic percussion, »Waterfall Cave Fantasy, Forever« sees the incredible musical minds of Brooke and Kainulainen working together as one to push their formidable precision even further. NYOS’ joyful embrace of the creative potential that comes with spontaneous improvisation can be felt on this record just as much as it can be heard.
