Inspired by Anna Tsing’s 2015 book, Matsutake is “the mushroom at the end of the world,” a metaphor for the possibility of life amidst capitalist ruins. Matsutake is a pungent delicacy whose flavor takes some getting used to, and a mushroom that can neither be cultivated nor industrially farmed. In a world defined by individualism, monocultures, and collapsing ecosystems, this mushroom thrives in the ruins of artificially planted pine forests.
Translated to music and creativity, »Matsutake« invites us to think in terms of polyphony, flow, and experimentation, rather than individual basslines, catchy vocals, and hit songs. With »Matsutake«, Bismut takes us on a journey away from alienation, through curiosity toward (potential) immortality, inviting us to find what is worth saving, rather than conquering and destroying.
»Matsutake« will be out on April 24, 2026 on vinyl and CD by Tonzonen and distributed by Cargo Records.

Bismut is a progressive heavy psych trio from Nijmegen in the Netherlands. Since 2016, their diverse musical approach and influences have evolved into a fantastic, funky, doomy mix. Their style has been described as progressive rock, doom, metal, stoner, heavy psych and plain old hard rock – but maybe it’s just instrumental death boogie. It goes without saying that you get to hear a whole range of weird and wonderful sounds at a Bismuth gig.
Since its inception, Bismut has played all over Europe, from cozy clubs to wicked stages at major festivals such as Into the Void, Zwarte Cross, Sonic Whip, Yellowstock, DesertFest Antwerp, Krach Am Bach, Tabernas, Echoes Of Erebos, Psychedelic Network Festival and Dunajam.
To date, Bismut have released three LPs. The first two were released exclusively on Lay Bare Recordings and are now sold out on vinyl: »Focus« in November 2018 and »Retrocausality« in September 2020.
Their latest album, »Ausdauer«, was released in October 2023 on Lay Bare Recordings and Spinda Records. This 40-minute musical journey further develops their unique and relentless sound to spread their psychedelic grooves even further across Europe.
