Today, Yellowknife heavy alternative fuzz-rock band Gnarwhal release their sophomore album »Lucid Machines«, a towering and immersive record that cements the band as one of the most compelling voices in Canada’s heavy underground. Expanding on the foundation of their earlier work, »Lucid Machines« is heavier, sharper, and more unflinching, pushing their sound into new territory while staying rooted in massive riffs and raw emotional weight.

At its core is the album’s title track, »Lucid Machines«, a sweeping and pulse-driven centrepiece that captures the record’s central tension between humanity and technology.

“»Lucid Machines« is the heart of the record, a sweeping, pulse-driven meditation on memory, control, and what’s left of the human spirit inside the code,” the band shares. Gnarwhal blends their crushing weight with eerie clarity, layering vulnerable vocals over tectonic grooves and atmospheric distortion. ‘Show me what makes you human’ becomes the central plea in a world of artificial echoes and stolen voices. It’s the band’s most expansive and emotionally resonant track to date, a fitting climax for an album that breathes, breaks, and resists.

Across the album, Gnarwhal weave together doom, grunge, and progressive metal into something both punishing and atmospheric. Songs move between crushing low-end, jagged intensity, and moments of eerie openness, tracing themes of control, decay, and resistance in an increasingly synthetic world.

Following earlier singles »Circuits«, »Wherewithal« and »Ancient Veins«, »Lucid Machines« reveals its full scope as a cohesive and dynamic body of work. It builds on the momentum of their 2023 self-titled debut, which earned a Western Canadian Music Award nomination, and 2024’s »Altered States« EP, which saw the band push into more experimental territory.
