Philly’s space/noise duo Deathbird Earth are set to release their debut album »Objective Consciousness« April 3rd on SRA Records (Soul Glo, HIRS), hot off the heels of their double collaboration LP releases with Nick Millevoi and Planet-Y.

Deathbird Earth’s sound tends to eschew typical genre classification but is made from a mix of heavy drums and distorted bass layered with keyboard sounds that may or may not be lifted from your favorite classic science fiction films. The album is available from SRA Records on translucent “black ice” vinyl, CD and tape.

»Objective Consciousness« documents the first year of Deathbird Earth’s time as a band; recording started exactly one year to the day after the band’s first practice. BJ (8 String Bass, Synthesizers, Vocals) and Dave (Drums, Percussion) have spent many years playing in various bands (Hulk Smash, Dialer, Psychic Teens, Gholas), but »Objective Consciousness« finds them making music together for the first time. Together they have created a sound that is sometimes proggy, sometimes noisy and sometimes hypnotic by blending heavy drums and bass with a wall of synthesizers topped off with shouted vocals and lots of delay.

The album was recorded at Red Planet and features more collaborators than actual band members. On Side A, two tracks were born out of full-blown collaborative sessions. »Mission: Planet-Y« was recorded with experimental duo Planet-Y which features Yanni Papadopoulos (Stinking Lizaveta) and »Mission: Nick Millevoi« was laid down with guitar virtuoso extraordinaire Nick Millevoi (Basic, Many Arms, Desertion Trio). Both sessions yielded a full 40 minutes worth of improved music and will each be released on limited LPs and cassettes (available via SRA Records!). The second side of the album features 4 tracks that play out as one song. Alex Smith (Alexoteric) provides the album’s titular line in his poem that appears during »Time II«. In addition, Dan Pisarcik (Occurian) contributes bass and guitar on »Mission: Time« and Leah Basarab (Vidrozhena, Rainbow Crimes) plays cello on “Time III«.

In the band’s own words:

BJ: “As fans of science fiction books we wanted our songs to be allegories for the real life struggles of the world today.”

Dave: “I am incredibly grateful that we were able get so many of our friends involved with us to collaborate on this record. I have never been a part of an album where such a large number of people outside of the band were able to be involved with the end result. At the same time, all of those collaborative aspects feel absolutely essential to the final version of the album. I couldn’t imagine any of those songs now without the elements that other people brought to the table – every collaborator brought something to the songs that elevated them to another level.”
